I don’t plan to see it and here are the reasons. If you can’t come up with a better name than the stupid inane one “Avatar” which just happens to also be the name of an anime cartoon then no amount of money can save it. I don’t want to encourage that behavior. This is clearly a throw enough money at it deal. I am a big fan of the first two Aliens Movies but I’ve just not been impressed with a lot of Cameron’s stuff. I didn’t go to the movies to watch Titanic though I did watch it and it was ok. This movie has the feel of a Kevin Costner boondoggle and appears to be just another example of Hollywood self important largess. The worst part is there are so many classic sci-fi/fantasy stories and worlds that deserve to be brought to life and instead we get this crap? I’m sure it is beautifully done but it still doesn’t make it worthwhile.
After the first ten minutes, I'm thinking, "Just Sink Already!"
The first ALIEN was directed by Ridley Scott. It established him as a top director.
Personally, I think Cameron's best was TRUE LIES. The first TERMINATOR was very good too, for straight-up action. But TITANIC? Couldn't sit through the whole thing. Cameron is technically brilliant, but he has all emotional subtlety of a Louisville Slugger.
There’s a Bollywood-produced computer-animated version of the Ramayana due out within a year that I’m really looking forward to. The Hindu mythology has so many epic stories that an advanced studio could do wonders with. I sometimes wonder why Disney can draw from the stories of so many cultures, and the best representative of the Indus valley they can find is Mowgli. They could do amazing things with the origin of Ganesha or, dare I say it, the Ramayana (though the Mahabharata might be more in WETA’s back yard).
