Your gal friend could gave been given better advice I think — I would ask her to not look at men at all, not give them an ear. Instead she might look at the faces of those around the man — for faces read character very fast and fairly accurately.
For example by looking at the faces of those women looking at the target man she might gauge that he is a charismatic Lothario, and then be able to step back and decide if she wants to put herself under such a man’s sway. Or she might in those faces of others see herself — for we often see in others what failings we ourselves have.
