...Friedman's departure left outgoing Houston Mayor Bill White and hair-care millionaire Farouk Shami as the two main contenders for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and lessened the chances of the race going to a runoff.
While it does not clear the field for White, it gives him the advantage over a less-known and less experienced opponent. White has a track record in office and proof he can win elections.
Shami says he will spend $10 million of his own money to win the nomination with his rags-to-riches life story, but he still will have to answer the ultimate question: Is Texas ready to have a hair-dresser for governor?
...Friedman said he met with White and Shami over the weekend and consulted with former Texas Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower.
After my visit with Bill, my mind was made up. There is a clear alternative for the people of Texas, and today I'm changing courses with a happy heart, Friedman said in a statement. Mayor White, Farouk and I share the same desire for changing the leadership in Austin, up and down the ballot.
Friedman said Hightower convinced him he could do important things as agriculture commissioner.
I'm confident that the torch for many of my issues will be carried forward in November, and now, we'll do our part by campaigning hard to represent our party and the people of Texas, starting with protecting our farmlands, not give them away to Spain, Friedman said, a reference to the Trans Texas Corridor project that was to be built by a Spanish company.
...White then jumped from a prospective U.S. Senate race to the governor's contest, changing the dynamics. White has filed as a candidate for governor, and Shami plans to file today...

[Does he do Perry’s hair?]
He better hope he does, because that is the closest that socialist a$$hole will ever get to the Austin Capitol!
What the hell happened to Texas?
Houston and Texas sure deserve better.
All hat and no cattle. He’s underqualified.
Stay home and you and us will have a dem at minimum and a muzzie dem at worst.
Stayin home got us oBOWma.
This means Texas will be a “home grown” state?
Pour Ol Kinky just don’t know the good ol Austin days are gone bye, bye.
As they say in East Texas, Kinky needs to run for the County Line.
Freepmail me or ping me from the original thread to get on/off the 2010 Texas Governor's Race ping list.
lol
A very odd question from a guy in Missouri! Didn't y'all elect a dead guy to the US Senate a few years ago? ;-0
I did not, but, yes, Carnahan died immediately died after the results were in, so his wife took his place in office. His death was poorly timed in an election cycle; I guess he should have made other plans.
I ask again, what the hell happened to Texas? I mean that with all sincerity, since Texas has long been one of the last bastions of liberty and the pioneer spirit, a place most of the rest of us looked fondly upon for those qualities.
I didn’t stay home and “got” us a Obama. If I had voted third party I’m told I would have wasted my vote. Instead I wasted my vote on John McCain.
.
A MUSLIM, a trecherous RINO woman (Hutchinson), a woman of questionable loyalties (Medina) and RINO Perry. What a choice!
I’ll have to stick with RINO Perry.
.
Medicinal use only, I presume.
Sure, yep, medicinal use. But you know I’m feeling a bit anxious right now, better go take my medicine.
But seriously, there’s a good Youtube video called “Weed Card” by a cute girl group named Garfunkel and Oates. It explains how many ways California let’s someone have an illness to qualify for a medicinal marijuana card. Tiger could probably get one for sex addiction if he lived there (or for sex enhancement for that matter), but apparantly he now lives on a boat.
“Houston and Texas sure deserve better.”
The problem with Houston is that it’s a big city of over 2 million people. What’s actually amazing is that despite the fact of Houston Harris County still (for now) tends to vote Republican ... with the notable exception of last year’s presidential election when there was no conservative on the ballot.
Sorry you took it personal. I try to keep replies to posts generic unless someone really needs to be named. Lots of us bit the bullet and voted for McShame, it was a bit easier with Sarahcuda in as co-pilot.
Still saying anyone staying home as some sort of “protest” should understand that their lack of vote is in effect a vote for the other candidate.
As RINOie as Juan is, he would have still been night and day from the muzzie from Kenya.
Nothing personal. I just don’t believe in the “wasted vote” theory. According to that theory if your candidate loses you wasted your vote. I’m done with voting for the lessor of two evils. It won’t happen again.
And, I, too, voted for McCain because of Sarah. I wanted to encourage her. We all know McCain that most of the votes McCain got was because of her. Had she not been on the ticket I would have voted third party or stayed home. Everyone knew there was no way O was going to lose this election. There was way too much cheatin’ goin’ on. It could have been fixed if we’d had a real conservative in office the last 8 years instead of a “Let’s put this behind us” Bush.
