MANILA, Philippines – Authorities moved thousands of villagers from harm's way near the Philippines' most active volcano Tuesday after it oozed lava and shot plumes of ash, and said they probably will spend a bleak Christmas in an evacuation center.

State volcanologists raised the alert level on the cone-shaped, 8,070-foot (2,460-meter) Mayon volcano overnight to two steps below eruption after ash explosions and dark orange lava fragments glowing in the dark trickled down the mountain slope.

Nearly 50,000 people live in a five-mile (eight-kilometer) radius around the mountain, and authorities began moving thousands of them in case it erupts, Albay provincial Gov. Joey Salceda said.

Observers say it was belching CO2 like Algore's jet.
10,000 of them actually.

And volcanoes were releasing massive amounts of CO2 before humans existed.

Actually, if this thing erupts, and the ashes are sent around the globe, it will cause more global cooling.
The only danger from this is the surrounding areas and jet planes flying in that area, volcano ashes not good for jet engines....

A magnificent volcano like that deserves a human sacrifice to keep it happy. Perhaps we could persuade AlGore to “take on for Mother Earth.” The locals could paint him green and festoon him with colorful, fluttering bird plumes to fool the volcano god into thinking Gore’s got some life left in him, get him drunk and then let the weasel wobble into a vent by telling him the cameras are “that way.” A guy as important as AlGore should have people to serve him in the afterlife, so line up, Earth Firsters.... :-)

In related news, NASA and CRU announced the installation of a new CO2 monitoring station 10 miles downwind from the volcano to help measure human caused CO2 level increases.
