Santorum’s Resurrection (Kathleen Parker approves)
Daily News ^ | 12/14/09 | Kathleen Parker

IS RICK SANTORUM running for president of the United States, or isn’t he?

I caught him by phone on a people mover at Dulles Airport and posed the question: He’s not running, then again, he’s not NOT running.

En route to South Carolina Tuesday to stump for gubernatorial candidate and Republican Rep. Gresham Barrett, Santorum wasn’t being cagey, just practical. Whether the former Pennsylvania senator can raise the millions needed for a presidential bid remains to be seen.

In the meantime, he has some things to say. For starters: “I have no great burning desire to be president, but I have a burning desire to have a different president of the United States.”

Santorum doesn’t see anyone in his party who energizes the three legs of the stool, as Ronald Reagan described the Republican issue clusters — the economy, national security and social conservatism.

Santorum is no mystery man. He left deep footprints on Capitol Hill, where he served 16 years — 12 in the Senate — before being defeated in 2006. Since then, he has been at the conservative Ethics and Public Policy Center, primarily pumping out op-eds on national security and terrorism.

In fact, Santorum’s “Gathering Storm” e-blasts to journalists and others at one time were so frequent that they began to feel like Chicken Little or Cassandra warnings of doom. You can leap for cover only so many times before you grab an umbrella and say, “I’ll take my chances.”

Though he has tempered the pace of his caveats, Santorum is still deadly serious about growing threats to America’s security, the greatest of which, he says, is Iran: “Afghanistan is important, but Iran is more important and we’re fumbling.”

President Obama, he says, doesn’t have a plan other than talking,

I thought DeMint was one of your colleagues, Ricky. Maybe you were too busy pushing Arlen down our throats to notice.

Santorum should just forget it and get on the Palin train. Maybe she’d consider him for VP.Then again, maybe she wouldn’t.

I’d say her support would be the political kiss of death.

I like Santorum, and in the past I sent him donations. But this is a lousy idea. How about running for Senator again? Or pitching in and helping Sarah?

He did one lousy thing—let his arm be twisted and supported Snarlin Arlen. You can find reasons for that, and Bush and Rove were the arm twisters. Arlen did actually help put through a couple of good SCOTUS choices, after Bush went astray between them, so maybe he was right.

But he just isn’t up to this, IMHO. I’d love to see him back in the Senate, and with Obama trying to kill the coal industry, maybe he might have some chance of doing it.

Kathleen Parker is a shallow country club snob. I wonder what her angle here is ?

It could be as simple as finding Rick to use as her conservative ‘fig leaf’.

"As we’ve seen and heard more from John McCain’s running mate, it is increasingly clear that Palin is a problem."

With Huckabee crashing and burning, the GOP elites need someone to take out Sarah from the right.
That's where Santorum comes into play. He could split the evangelicals from Sarah.
I have great respect for Rick, but he should have looked at the warning signals in 2006 and declined to run for re-election. He could have been the GOP nominee.
Only Governor Palin is exhibiting real leadership. She doesn't care about intra-party squabbles or how to "fix" the GOP - she's just out there doing her thing and that's why she has the support she does.
And you know after Rick splits the conservative base and we get another RINO, Parker and other beltway conservatives will ditch him in a jiffy.

Earlier this year, when Specter was still a GOPer, there was talk of Santorum mounting a primary challenge to Specter. Of course, that was only to split the vote against Toomey.

Now Santorum is pondering a Presidential run to split the vote for a RINO. Santorum is an inside the beltway yes man.

Well put....Wish I had thought it through this way, initially....My first reaction was "Buzz off!"...There is the issue of "amnesty" as well...

Ricky, Newt, and Mitt need to rent a boat and sail away. Same old same old is not going to cut it no more. These guys played for their benefit, not ours. See ya!

Aha. So, try to throw Santorum in there.

Santorum who can’t even say that he likes Sarah or mention her name? THAT makes me suspicious.

Well then, I guess we’re gonna bust. I hope she does well, and based on what I know know, she would do a very good job.

But let’s not put all of our hope into one person. What happens if she loses the primary to DeMint? Will you not vote for him?

I agree with you. Santorum did one thing negative to conservatives, and they will never forgive him. Btw, he endorsed Apecter, but he wasnt the only one who voted for him in the primary then in the general.

And who were the people voting for Specter over Toomey? Most conservatives I know vote their conscience, not based on endorsements. So either there were ind/dems voting (likely) or these tough guy conservatives actually were convinced to vote for Spector because one man’s opinion.

IOW, Santorum was first elected to the senate in '94 - 18 years before 2012. Presidents are fresh faces; anything over 14 years after first election to governorship or senator, and you're old news like McCain, Kerry, Dole, et al. Besides, no senator has ever defeated a sitting president. It wants an executive resume with Governor on it for that . . .

NO.

I like Santorum but he has no chance. He was CRUSHED in PA by the functional retard Bob Casey.
