Alex Salmonds opposition to nuclear power could sabotage targets to cut Scotlands greenhouse gases by half, a report prepared for SNP ministers has suggested.
Released ahead of the First Ministers visit this week to the Copenhagen climate change summit, the study warned carbon dioxide emissions increased by seven per cent in one year alone, between 2005 and 2006.
This was largely thanks to the countrys two ageing nuclear plants winding down before being decommissioned, and the energy shortfall being made up by coal and gas plants.
However, this cannot continue as new European emission limits and fines threaten the continued operation of fossil-fuelled power stations, the report found.
Meanwhile, many of the renewable technologies Mr Salmond favours are unproven and are unlikely to provide a solution in the short or medium term.
Its conclusions were echoed by Sir Ian Wood, the oil magnate and Scotlands second richest man, who accused SNP ministers of being in denial over their anti-nuclear stance.
They have set Scotland some of the strictest carbon targets in the world, pledging to cut emissions by 42 per cent by 2020 and by 80 per cent by 2050.
The First Minister is visiting the summit to boast about the targets, but has vowed to veto any new nuclear stations being built north of the Border.

They are just as much anti-progress as they are pro-earth.
The Scots can go back cutting peat but perhaps that will be illegal since that too emits CO2.
I’ve always thought it would be a good idea to try to morph “climate change deals” into “pro-nuclear power deals”. Many greens still oppose nuclear, but we have enough of them on our side to pass pro-nuclear legislation.
When you can’t derail something, change it.
you are german?
No. But I lived there (at a little USAF communications site in the Taunus Mountains) from 84-86. Back in the wonderful fun days of the Pershing Missile protests, the RAF, Dev Sol, and the foundation of die Grünen. I remember whenever I saw one of those stupid little Citroen buggies, it would invariably have an antinuclear sticker on it. (That one or another one)
A great time...25 years ago, back when I spoke decent German...I still remember when riding the S-Bahn into Frankfurt, getting a Bild and then very carefully shaking the blood out before starting to read it.
Lol. i assumed that you are a german because you used german anti nuke slogens in the pictures, btw. good observation of germany and especially about the “greens” ;-)
