A conservative billionaire who fell shy of a first-round presidential victory can win a January runoff if he peels enough voters away from the center-left coalition that has governed Chile for nearly two decades.
Sebastian Pinera, the right's greatest hope of regaining the presidency since the 1990 departure of dictator Augusto Pinochet, won 44 percent of Sunday's vote, to 30 percent for former President Eduardo Frei, with 98 percent of the vote counted.

Frei would be a disaster. He was responsible for the emergence of the minoroty Marxist element, the destruction of Chilean democracy and the consequent counterstrike by Pinochet.
I was just down there last week. They had a rally on the beach where we were hanging out. All I know is that the flags were RED, the music was pumpin’ and they had about 300 kids all carrying on. I figured that THAT must be their version of the liberal party. -Hey, it seems to work everywhere, don’t it?

Quite correct! The moment I saw the name Frei I jumped to conclusions. I haven’t paid much attention to Chile in recent years. However, I never trusted the cowardly father, but I will reserve judgement with regard to the son.
