Appointing “commissions”, or “study groups”, or “blue ribbon panels” is nothing more than cowardice. They serve no other purpose than providing political cover. Most of the time they produce nothing but vaporware. On the odd chance that a “commission”might come up with a good idea, it still has to be voted on and implemented, and the chances of that in the current political climate are next to nothing.

Exactly. Theoretically, a commission could focus enough attention on the debt to stir the public to force action. In practice, it would be like a junkie writing a plan to quit.
