Well, first of all, Allahpundit has a long record of Sarah bashing. He hates Sarah. So, regard this with suspicion.

But the numbers could well be true.

The basic problem is that insiders like to wheel and deal. THEY run the party. THEY make the offers. THEY sell the senate and congressional slots.

The last thing in the world they want to see is a powerful source coming at them from completely outside the party leadership. Someone who can’t be bribed or bought. Someone who won’t pay them for giving them the nod. Someone who might even—perish the thought—sweep them out of their jobs.

If you’ve read Going Rogue, there’s this mysterious outfit called “headquarters” that runs the McCain campaign, tells Sarah what to do, micromanages the campaign—and screws up. It seems obvious that McCain was just another figurehead. Somebody else was running the campaign, and presumably the primary earlier.

These are the guys who send Sarah the mysterious message—”GET OFF THE ATKINS DIET!” Sarah answers, “But I’m not on the Atkins diet.” “Never mind, says one of those idiot handlers. Get off it immediately! And whatever you do, don’t go to the back of the plane and talk to the reporters!”

Sarah is very polite about McCain all through the book—as is proper in the circumstances. McCain is a patriot, he wants the good of the country. The real problem is “headquarters,” and all those idiot handlers who are jumping ship by the time November comes around, sabotaging McCain so they can get a job with somebody else.

Or the woman who puts Sarah on the Katie Couric show because poor Katie needs a little help with her viewer numbers. And (although Sarah never says so) probably so she can get a job with Katie or the networks after the campaign is over.

McCain seems to take all of this for granted. He’s a good little candidate. Sarah is another matter.

I was wondering just who "headquarters" was. Could "headquarters" be Soros?
