This story does a disservice to Pabst.

“Politically, Sean Penn is a POS. Acting-wise, he’s fantastic.”
Actually, I think both Penn and Damon are good actors, Penn being a little better. I’ve seen enough Nick Cage to know what bad acting looks like.
Having said that, I wouldn’t pee on either Penn or Damon if they were on fire.
Actually, I like Damon. Good Will Hunting was great. Loved all three Bourne movies. The Departed is one of my top 10 of all time. Oceans 11 and 13 were great. The Good Shephard. Saving Private Ryan. The Rainmaker. He’s in quite a bit of good stuff.

Don’t know if I’ll watch it in the cinema. But definitely I’ll watch it on DVD. Always been a fan of Eastwood and am a big fan of Morgan Freeman. I can take M. Damon or leave him. Interesting to see what Clint does with the story.
I don’t mind that it’s about N Mandela. Doesn’t bother me.
That makes 2 of us.
And how wonderful Clint Eastwood is.
I was in Cape Town during the time they were filming this movie, so I’ll go see it for that reason.
I agree with you about the pose at the end. But overall, I enjoyed the movie. Vintage Clint. And I didn’t see exactly where the story was going.
Eastwood is overrated as a director IMO. Million Dollar Baby was absolutely awful, Mystic River oozing with dreariness, Unforgiven the only half-way decent one. And he always depends on these self-centered raging liberal schleps as actors. I'd respect him more if he gave unknowns a chance.
Eastwood is better as an actor. Though he doesn't even have much of an acting range.
Just go out and rent an old Clint Eastwood film. How about “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”? In fact, I own most of his old spaghetti westerns.
Nelson Mandela, IMHO, was a curious mixture of good and evil. On the one hand, he was a Communist terrorist whose followers went around cruelly murdering people. On the other hand, when he came into power, he resisted killing all the whites, as his followers might have liked.
South Africa is a criminal mess, and that’s partly his fault. But it could have been a lot worse, and probably will be, now that Mandela is no longer in charge. Still, it is certainly going down the drain a lot more slowly than Rhodesia did, and I think Mandela deserves some credit for that.
A saint? No. People who think that need to put on glasses that make everyone look the same color, and think again.
“Million Dollar Baby was absolutely awful...” come on now...let’s not get crazy. The movie was very very good. I am with you on Mystic River though.
The reviewer does a good job seeing this from an outside perspective. But he does slip up when he says that black South Africans did not care about the World Cup win. South Africans of all races were out in the streets celebrating.
I don’t know that it prevented civil war, but Mandela’s actions around the time did a lot to give him some credibility amongst whites.
And then it went back to the status quo politics and South African society.
Million Dollar Baby turned into a screed on euthanasia in the last half hour with Morgan Freeman playing his usual “sage-like” role. Yawn. What a twisted bore it was. Yuk.
What a great guy!
Are there any good rugby scenes?
The girl is Kristen Kreuck.
Where was the Princess Mra. Mandela....I knew this film would be a big guilt fest with the racist Freeman, the dumazz Damon and the tottering old lib Eastwood. Hope it manages to lose millions!
