Honduras refuses to let ousted leader leave

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Honduras' coup-installed government says ousted leader Manuel Zelaya is free to leave the country, but there's a catch: Zelaya can't go as president, and he says he won't go as anything else.

And so he remained holed up Thursday in the Brazilian Embassy, where he has been staying since he slipped back into the country three months ago. If he sets foot outside the building, the leaders who ousted him have vowed to arrest him on charges of treason and abuse of power.

They appeared to be softening their stance on Wednesday when they initially responded positively to a Mexican request seeking guarantees of Zelaya's safe passage to the airport so he could fly to Mexico as a "distinguished guest."

Zelaya said he had spoken with both Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Dominican President Leonel Fernandez about meeting Honduras' president-elect Porfirio "Pepe" Lobo in a neutral site to "find a peaceful solution to the situation in the country."

Mexico sent a plane to pick up Zelaya, and more than 100 of his supporters raced to the embassy to see if he would emerge.

But the government quickly said he could go only as a private citizen requesting political asylum, conditions that would bar him from any political activity and would in essence require Zelaya to concede he is no longer president. In the meantime, they diverted the Mexican flight to neighboring El Salvador.

Honduras' interim information minister, Rene Zepeda, said Thursday that the deal is off unless Zelaya accepts asylum.

"find a peaceful solution to the situation in the country."

A peaceful solution has already been found. They ousted the traitor, in accordance with their Constitution. They had a regular election, in accordance with their Constitution, and elected a new President.

All nice and peaceful ...

What coup?

All I heard about was a constitutional impeachment and removal from office.

This miserable SOB wouldn't have a leg to stand on if our de facto POTUS had backed up the legitimate constitutional Government of Honduras, instead of Chavez, Lula, Morales, Ortega, and Castro.

Coup my bunions. Zelaya was thrown out on his ass by constitutional means, exactly as we ought to do to our wannabe left-wing POTUS for life. All our SOB's support for their SOB proves is that he has the same respect for the Constitution of the US as he has for that of Honduras, which is to say, "none."

Hold your horses Tex! That's the worst idea of the day. If this Zelaya SOB dies from even Terminal Venereal Fulminating Athlete's Foot, (TVFAF) (a) it will be promptly blamed on The CIA, and (b) every left-wing, Obama-voting fruitcake will be wearing a Zelaya tee shirt the next day, blaming America for his untimely demise. Hell, Obama will probably wear one.

Why not? Instead of backing the legitimate constitutional removal of Zelaya by his government, in which is own party was very well represented and so voted, Obama went with his pals Lula, Chavez, Ortega, Morales, and of course, Castro. (privately Fidel says Obama is an a$$hole) Obama backed Zelaya, a guy who is on videotape helping himself to cash from the Honduran Treasury. A guy who tried to stage a phony referendumm with pre-printed ballots from Nicaragua, after his Congress turned him down for another term as President on constitutional grounds.

Honduras, under Micheletti and their congress, showed tremendous guts in sticking to their Constitution and running a valid election, internationally monitored and held fair and square. Their Congress didn't sell out, as did our Electoral College, in certifying a man as President who did not meet their Constitutional requirements.

I make the score in the Constitution Game

Honduras Constitution: 1
American Constitution: 0

In all fairness, I must point out that Mr. Zelaya is a Natural Born Citizen of his country. I am sorry I cannot say the same of our POTUS.

Now we should take another approach. If he does not leave volutarily he is dragged out kicking and screaming from the embassy. If he does not want to leave the country. he faces the judgement of the military and police.

They have to tread easy until Z’s term ends, around Jan 26th, or Bambi might send in USA troops to “preserve democracy”. Just keep him penned up in Embassy. He wants to go to Mexico and foment rebellion. They also must induce him to return the Millions he stashed away in his personal accounts.
