Power company Caithness Energy has given General Electric a $1.4 billion contract to supply wind turbines and 10 years' worth of maintenance for an Oregon wind farm, GE announced Thursday.

The massive 845-megawatt wind farm, Shepherds Flat, will be located near Arlington, Oregon, but span approximately 30 square miles and cover parts of Oregon's Gilliam and Morrow Counties.

GE estimates that it will supply 338 of its 2.5-megawatt wind turbine models to be installed between 2011 and 2012. Although they have been used in Europe and Asia, the company says the Shepherds Flat project will include the first U.S. installations of these specific GE turbines.

They’ve been the largest donor to both parties for a couple of years actually.

What do the folks in Idaho think about massive GE turbines changing their natural wind flow from the west?

Talk about causing climate change!

They seem to be very kind to "the one".

I had just a small amount of GE stock. I sold it. I decided I’d rather not make money from whores.

He (the GE president) “paid” Obama back today with (another) serial condemnation of “excessive” pay (for executives of companies, not unions, government workers, or democrat thugs (er, ACORN) extortionists ....)

Follow the money.

My nascent young investor son and I came to the same conclusion, and made the same portfolio moves as you.

I told him what a great American corporation General Electric used to be. Literally a one company mutual fund.

Jason Lewis, substitute host for El Rushbo, August 11, 2008 on the E.I.B Network:

"The federal government has to subsidize windmill production through production tax credits of about 1.8¢ per kilowatt. Wind Farms also receive an accelerated depreciation. Wind farms are also land intensive. They produce a fraction of the energy of a traditional power plant but they require 100 times the acreage.

From the National Center for Policy Analysis: to produce a 1000 megawatt power plant a wind farm would require 192,000 acres or 300 square miles. A nuclear plant would need about 1700 acres (or 2.65 mi2), and about 3 mi2 for a coal fired power plant. The transmission lines for the wind turbines would be massive, 12,000 miles just for the array."

I wonder what level of electricity generation they guarantee and how are they going to store it for use during peak hours ?

Oh, Nachum! You’re such a cynic. Now I’m sure GE won that contract because they came in with the best bid. /s

Gotta feel sorry for the residents of Gilliam and Morrow Counties. I doubt they asked for this.

There goes any views they had.
