To the headline... It’s abbreviated WV. Why do ppl not know this?! Sorry pet peeve. Also I have met lots of ppl who don’t know that WV is a state. They think it is western Virginia. Lol!

I respectfully disagree. W.Va. is the traditional abbreviation and is correct, except for postal addresses which were shortened for zip code usage.

Aeons ago, before the US Postal Service shoved its boring two-letter designations for each state down our throats, "W. Va." would have been a common abbreviation for your State's name, as "Penn." or even "Penna." for a certain State to your north.

So ... some folks don't know that WV (AKA W.Va.) is its own State ...

1) Until "The Late Unpleasantness", it wasn't. And when it did become a State (by seceding from a bunch of secessionists), "West Virginia" wasn't the first name proposed for the new State.

2) Some folks have it even worse than you ... many people seem to think that "New Mexico" is not even one of these United States.
