Air Force planning newspaper for S. Korea units

OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea — The Air Force plans to publish a twice-monthly print and online newspaper for its two big fighter bases in South Korea, officials said Wednesday.

They hope to start publication of the Crimson Sky in the spring, but no start date will be set until the publishing contract gets approval from the U.S. military’s contracting officials, said Maj. Denise Kerr, spokeswoman for 7th U.S. Air Force (Air Forces Korea).

Its news pages will be devoted largely to the two U.S. fighter units on the peninsula: the 51st Fighter Wing at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek and the 8th Fighter Wing at Kunsan Air Base on the southwestern seacoast.

Both wings used to publish print newspapers, but they were eliminated after the Air Force in 2006 told bases to drop print editions and move their news online.

Earlier this year, former Pacific Air Forces commander Gen. Howie Chandler ordered that PACAF bases bring back print newspapers after airmen and family members told him they missed the information and convenience of the print papers.

When I was in Korea in 06-07 Osan’s golf course was getting redone. It is one of the best courses I’ve played on.
