Magellan was a better product than Garmin only a couple of years ago, and was the favored brand for geocachers due to better signal reception. Garmin’s stuff has gotten better, but so has Magellan. I just don’t see any of the “real” GPS companies getting shut out by fragile smartphones, at least in the “outdoor” market. Maybe as an urban product, but not for hunters etc. There are several other more technical GPS manufacturers that I would expect to sink before Magellan, such as Loran, Trimble, and DeLorme.

Magellan, Garmin, whomever... the end product can be as fantastic as they want, but unless the constellation of GPS satellites is maintained, it is all for naught.

The current administration has shown severe incompetence with the U.S. budget and I suspect GPS will start to fall by the wayside in the not-to-distant future due to their malfeasance.

Agreed. Hubby had a Garmin, I have a Magellen. Its not just that I prefer my Magellen, its that both the maps and the reception are better. Hubby gave the Garmin to his Mom (who rarely leaves the city) and bought a Magellen. My daughter had GPS in her phone, but trying to drive, navigate off that tiny device, respond to a toddler, etc - hazardous. Those phones are not fit for camping or hiking - if you are the least bit out in the country, you have no signal so they are useless.

Loran is a big player in the marine industry, and they have made some great strides lately. I believe their system is independent of the GPS system and therefor not subject to data drop outs. Trimble is huge in the survey and machine control (construction) industry. Neither of these guys are going anywhere.
