Los Angeles, CA (AP) -- California officials plan to suspend new enrollments for a program that tests low-income women for breast cancer and to tighten eligibility standards when the program reopens.
The Every Woman Counts program won't enroll new clients from Jan. 1 until July 2, 2010, and will restrict enrollment to women over the age of 50 thereafter. Previously, women had to be 40 years old to be eligible for the program.

declining state tobacco tax revenues and increased demand were to blame for cutbacksThe simple solution is to just raise the tobacco tax. Oh wait, raising taxes is what caused the revenues to go down.
Raise them anyways, just so they can say they tried.
The new screening recommendations provide air cover for the reduction in services.
What a coincidence they went to 50 years old from 40... just after that death panel suggested this change....
Change you can believe in! If all of those low income women die of breast cancer, they can’t vote for democrats.
No, stupid me, democrats vote long after they die.
Simply chilling! I had my first mamo at 28 because I had found a lump. I can’t imagine anyone having something like that and being told they were too young to have one!
The simple solution is to just raise the tobacco tax.
They determined tobacco was a health hazard; therefore, they taxed it to discourage use. Then, when people quit smoking due to the cost, they complain about lost revenue.
Perhaps they should decrease the tobacco tax and mandate smoking for all adults...
They're just as addicted to the tobacco money as smokers are to the tobacco itself. Our gov't is full of junkies.
The Every Woman Counts program is now known as The Every Woman Doesn’t Count Unless We Want Them To program. When ‘Government’ is paying, We The People aren’t important.
Yep. Just like they want to hold back on the pap smears, yet you’re to give your 9 year old their Gardisil cervical cancer shots.
