Chinese researchers have more than doubled their output of scientific papers and now are second only to the United States in terms of volume, according to a report from Thomson Reuters released on Monday.

The research is heavily focused on materials and technology and shows China is poised to dominate several areas of industry, the report finds.

"China's comparative growth is striking, far outstripping that of the rest of the world," reads the report, available here

It's really a matter or priorities. The Chinese are doing their best to get their kids through school, Bill Gates is treated like a rock star in Asia, espcially China, and Stephen Hawking, if he had stayed in America, would likely have been euthanized rather than living.

Until the West stops trying to make everyone equal through social programming, then we in the US are going to keep falling behind. Whether we like it or not, China is going to be a country to reckon with in the future. Just 40 years or so ago, ten even, no one really took China seriously or really factored in the decisions the Chinese government would make and now we are pretty much hoping that China decides to go along with our goals.

It's a basic fact that China is becoming more and more and more capitalistic and it'll be easier to do business and start businesses without the red tape that is bogging us down in the United States. In time, unless something is done and our government reprioritizes big time, China is going to move to the center of the world stage and they are likely going to end up more deferred to than America.

China is taking the lead because they have a vast history of valuing educated people over their entertainment industry. America values our brainless celebrities over people who actually know what they are doing.

Half of ours is just justifying global warming so it shouldn’t even count as science.

All the thanks must go to Clinton, he did his best to make sure China would be on a par with the US.

Is it just me or do I read history as showing that Democrats tend to give (or sell) all our secrets to our enemies and Republicans tend to do the opposite (keep our national secrets)? Is it just me? I think not!

Every single US president since Nixon has done that.

Not to argue, but could you give me example of W doing this. I’m looking to see both sides of this discussion.

Yeah, but do the chicoms rely on "tricks" and deleted data to base their results on? /disgust

Not every one, only crinton gave the chicoms “most favored nation” trading status. IMHO it led us directly to our current situation with china.

Bush deserves real credit for meeting with the Dalai Lama and taking steps to build up India as a counterweight to China. But his administration also approved the extension of permanent normal trade relations with the PRC, pressured Taiwan's president to curb his anti-PRC language, did very little during China's crackdown on Tibet in 2008, and Bush himself lent his prestige to the PRC by attending the Beijing Olympics, an event which marked China's coming out as a great power.

Corporations need to get their act together and realize that "America's most valuable asset is its innovation and IP reserves, and that these will likely become the main source of U.S. competitive and economic strength in the 21st century."

More.. "China's expansion into the world of innovation will test America's reputation and know-how. To peek inside China's largest free trade zone, Tianjin, is to glimpse the country's carefully calculated destiny: high-tech industries, cutting-edge research institutes and ambitions to become home to the world's most innovative companies. China no longer wants to be the world's factory for cheap products. Under pressure to create better-paying jobs and to clean up its environment, the nation is trying to snag blue chip companies by vowing to crack down on intellectual property theft and schooling a new class of managers."

Lenin had a name for capitalist "blue chip" companies that believed that their resources, research, IP, and patents would be safe in the early U.S.S.R.: useful idiots. Yes, China has laws but what about enforcement? My comments.

Stop letting the Chi-Coms, et al steal America's assets! However IMO the assets stolen so far about equals the pile of dollars and Treasury bonds Red China has. :)

I was born before the Cold War, the promises Communists make, no matter from which country, mean nothing.

The Chinese have stolen all of their technology.

Before Clinton ran out of campaign cash in ‘96 and ordered Loral to transfer missile guidance technology to them, they couldn’t get a missile high enough to separate the second stage.

China is all about theft and piracy, and would go nowhere if they had no one to steal from. Congress even destroyed our patent laws to help the Chinese.

“Chinese researchers have more than doubled their output of scientific papers and now are second only to the United States in terms of volume,”

One reason is that Faculty at American Universities prefer Chinese grad. students and post docs to Americans...they work long hours for much less than Americans. It is not a brain issue, strictly economics.

True! - I have a friend that owns a large number of filling stations in the Bay Area, and all of his managers are Chinese immigrants, because they are willing to manage a station for minimum wage.

The Chinese have stolen all of their technology.

Let's put it this way - if the Kenyans stole all of our technology, is there the slightest danger they could actually do anything with it?

It doesn't matter where China got the knowledge, they will still use it to eventually surpass us because they have the will and we don't.
