Attorney General Martha Coakley has defeated three other candidates to win the Democratic nomination in the race to succeed the late Sen. Edward Kennedy. On the Republican side, State Sen. Scott Brown defeated attorney Jack E. Robinson.
Jim Gomes, director of the Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise, a policy research group at Clark University, Worcester, Mass., said public interest in filling the seat with someone like Mr. Kennedy, who died Aug. 25 after a bout with brain cancer, faded after the senator's wife and other family members declined to enter the race. "I have not sensed the voters of Massachusetts looking at this election to find the nearest replica of Sen. Kennedy," he said.
Last month, a Boston Globe poll had found Ms. Coakley leading her nearest rival, U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano, among likely voters by 43% to 22%, although strategists said internal polling by the campaigns showed the race has since tightened. A Dec. 5-6 poll conducted by Suffolk University in three Massachusetts towns identified as bellwethers found 39% of likely voters preferring or leaning toward Ms. Coakley, compared with 25% for Mr. Capuano.
Polls showed Ms. Coakley and Mr. Capuano were well ahead of the other two Democrats in the race, Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca and Alan Khazei, co-founder of the City Year community service organization. Polls also indicated that the two Democratic front-runners would both beat state Mr. Brown, the likely Republican candidate, by wide margins.
If Ms. Coakley ultimately wins the primary and the general election, the 56-year-old prosecutor would be the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts. She would also become the 18th woman sitting in the 100-member U.S. Senate, a record.

Ted probably did her....
yes she is the SEIU candidate
The ever arrogant Cokely (sic) ran ads that urged voters to select the next US sinator (sic), ignoring that this was a primary as opposed to the actual 1/19/10 election.
Alan Khazei frigging beat Pags - he came in last. I wonder who spent more $ per vote, him or Mitt last year?
Is Coakley human or one of the androids from Futureworld?
Amen!
Fells Acres Day Care - what at totally crock of sh*t.
I’ll crall on my ass to vote for Scott Brown next month. I’d rather Ted K than Coakley - honestly.
crawl = crall
idiot.
i have no idea why peeple come on here and think it’s smart to bust on scott brown. Like he is some rino taking the seat away from a reaganite? they’all wanna run arch-conservatives in every race.
I gotta tell you, Scott Brown’s speech was pretty red-meat Republican. It would play well in SC or WY.
He’s all we have, and he’s not bad, IMO.
Again, if it was another state, I’d be much more confident that he could pull it off and win. But, as we know, much of the voting populace here have rock for their heads.
MA voters make slimy rocks look smart.
Massachusetts.. more stupid people per capita than any other state in the Union.
Entrenched Corruption is our motto..
That will make Howie Carr very happy!
our best hope is for Mass to lose a HOUSe seat in the census. Dropping from 10 to 9 would be a GOP pickup!
I was optimistic when this race first started, that Brown could get over 45%. I don’t see it now, though. We would need a huge turnout of our base.
I don’t know much about politics anymore. Hasn’t it been odd, thus far? Hardly anyone said a cross word about Coakley (her opponents).
Well, there are about ~35% of us that know up from down, it’s the other ~65% that blow chucks, literally.
Again, Coakley just sucks...she almost makes Kerry look humanoid...almost.
Well if Howie’s lurking, he can use it! I won a Hearth and Kettle certificate from his show years ago, so we’ll be even then.
Agreed - that would be a GOP pickup - good thinking!!!
The Rats have apparently adopted the characteristics of The Borg from Star Trek...they operate like a monolith...they are evil and souless.
Fingers crossed for Scotty B!
Infuriating,isn’t it?
