Ohio executes inmate with 1-drug lethal injection

Ohio executed a killer Tuesday by performing the nation's first lethal injection using a single drug, a supposedly less painful method than previous executions that required three drugs.

Kenneth Biros was pronounced dead at 11:47 a.m. Tuesday, about 10 minutes after one dose of thiopental sodium began flowing into his veins at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville. The U.S. Supreme Court had rejected his final appeal about two hours before.

Experts predicted the thiopental sodium would take longer to kill the 51-year-old Biros than the convention three-drug cocktail, but the 10 minutes it apparently took him to die was about the usual length of time even under the method previously used by Ohio and still used by most other death penalty states.

The mother, sister and brother of Biros' victim, Tami Engstrom, applauded as the warden announced the time of death.....

I had that stuff as a general anesthetic when I had my wisdom teeth pulled. When the IV went in, it was like someone flipped a light switch.

When I came to, it seemed as though no time at all had passed. It was eerie.

Did they then dismember him and scatter his pieces around the state?

It would be appropriate.

At least he apologized for the crime instead of admitting his innocence throughout.

Eliminated two copays. That could add up! Way to show fiscal discipline!

Still, it took 18 years to come to finality. No one should spend more than 2 years on Death Row.

His apologies very well may have fallen on deaf ears. If he truly did give his life to Christ while in prison, then he shall likely see the woman he so brutally murdered and dismembered. What a way to spend eternity. Only by the Grace of Jesus could this happen to be considered Heaven.

Do they use a new clean needle for each one executed? If so, Why?

Same here. I had an extraction/implant procedure and I remember the surgeon saying, okay, we're giving you the anesthesia now, and then it was like, lights out.

I can appreciate why even dentists who offer general anesthesia as a treatment option have to do two years of residency in a hospital before they can be licensed to use it in their practice. If they screw up you go to sleep, permanently.

What’s the big deal? Meth addicts do this to themselves everyday.

Shame the Guardian and other leftists won’t be able to trumpet the ‘LONG CRUEL’ angle anymore.

his apologies are fine for the family, but religiously speaking, they mean nothing. The only person that can give him forgiveness is his victim. And she’s dead, hence no forgiveness and no salvation. “Thou shall not murder.”

There is always salvation in Christ, but He does not announce whether the prospect is truly contrite or not...

At least with the electric chair I could participate. When they fried someone I always turned off all of my electrical appliances so I could help insure there was ample energy to do the job. Just doing my part. Nowadays, I can’t help.

Agreed.

Every time I see one of these guys terminated it just brightens my day.

I still don’t understand why we don’t simply adopt the Chinese method of a bullet to the head. Cheaper, more effective, no issues for the court to decide.
