Hutchison officially in the race

By Jason Embry | Monday, December 7, 2009, 09:29 AM

U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison filed to run for governor this morning at state Republican Party headquarters.

So for any doubters out there, we now know that we really are going to see the long-awaited showdown between the two biggest names in Texas politics: Hutchison and Gov. Rick Perry, her fellow Republican.

Hutchison rattled off a familiar list of issues she’s stressing in her campaign: protecting private-property rights, reforming the Texas Department of Transportation, protecting the borders, improving schools. She again criticized Perry for trying to require school girls to get a human papillomavirus immunization. And she reiterated that she’s for term limits and unspecified limits on campaign contributions.

Asked about the entry into the race of popular Houston Mayor Bill White, a Democrat, she suggested that she would be the more electable Republican in the general election.

“Number one, I’m a conservative,” Hutchison said. “And number two, I have won elections by over 60 percent of the vote every time that I have been on the ballot. Governor Perry got 39 percent of the vote the last time he ran. So I think Republicans will look at winning, they will look at strengthening the Republican Party and they will see that I am the candidate who can win.”

Hutchison files for governor; hits on Perry and White

R.G. Ratcliffe, Houston Chronicle, 12.07-09

Hutchison files for governor; hits on Perry and White U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison today used the entry of Houston Mayor Bill White into the Democratic contest for governor as a reason Republicans should vote for her over Gov. Rick Perry in the March 2 GOP primary.

"Certainly, he (White) is a credible candidate. That makes it more important for Republicans to vote for the candidate who can win," Hutchison said.

She noted that she received more than 60 percent of the vote in her general election campaigns while Perry was re-elected in 2006 with 39 percent of the vote. She described herself as the better general election candidate who can lead a Republican ticket to victory..........

Hutchison outlined the main points of her campaign:

Fixing transportation problems, addressing illegal immigration, making health care more affordable, improving education, protecting private property rights and ethics reform "to end the cronyism and mismanagement of our state government."

.............

Perry spokesman Mark Miner reacted to Hutchison filing:

"After more than 16 years in Washington and a record of voting for bailouts, earmarks and record deficits, Sen. Hutchison has proven that she has lost touch with the people of Texas. Gov. Perry will continue to run a campaign based on the progress Texas has made and the leadership necessary to continue moving the state forward. Texas is better off economically because of Gov. Perry's conservative leadership that has emphasized spending cuts over tax increases, job creation over burdensome policies, and individual freedom over government intervention."

Bringing Washington D.C. to the Texas Governor’s mansion is not a good idea. I will be glad to vote against her in the primary.

But the question remains, will Bill White (D-Houston) be taking her Senate seat?

She’s already been down here running for several months. Why doesn’t she just go away? I’ll tell ya. She is collecting money for her retirement. She will keep all the campaign donations for herself.

White is running for Governor too. It's a deal. Two of them run against Perry to try to force him out and get her in. White and Kay Bailout are in cahoots.

Also sets Bill White on the state radar for another office run in 2 years.

He’s like Chris Bell, a career politician who has to hold an office somewhere regardless of scope.

May Kinky Friedman stick a fork in his political aspirations in the Democrat primary.

The senate seat replacement will depend somewhat upon when she officially retires, assuming she retires as she has said she would. Upon retirement the Gov. can appoint a temp replacement to fill the seat until an election can be held to fill the remainder of the term. If she had retired in the fall/late 09 like she said she would then the special election could have been held on May 8, 2010. I don’t know how the dates will work out now as she delays the retirement.
