Russia gears up for major marketing launch of its Su-35 fighter jets

Russia has launched its Su-35 fighter-jet program. Russia's Sukhoi Co. has begun implementing a contract to deliver the Su-35 to the Russian Air Force. Under the contract signed in August 2009, the Russian Air Force, in the largest purchase in 20 years, would acquire 48 Su-35 fighters.

"Long-term contracts for the fighter aircraft delivery to the Russian Air Force and foreign customers allow Sukhoi Co. to provide for a steady work load of its serial plants by combat aircraft production and shift from modernizing aircraft in the Russian Air Force inventory to manufacturing new products," Sukhoi said. In a statement on Nov. 17, Sukhoi said its plant on Komsomolsk-on-Amur has begun production of component parts. The company said serial production of the aircraft would begin in 2010.

Executives said Sukhoi and Russia's arms export agency, Rosoboronexport, have been briefing potential clients of Su-35. They said Algeria and Libya have expressed interest in the aircraft.

The Su-35 included a new phased array radar system with long-range aerial target detection. The aircraft, with stealth qualities, has been equipped with new air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles.

"The Su-35 is a substantially modernized highly maneuverable multifunctional 4++ generation aircraft employing technologies of the fifth generation," Sukhoi said. "They make it superior to all other fourth generation fighter jets now under development worldwide."

This would be one of the best Eastern fighters that can take on the F-22 Raptor, as long as it has a skilled VVS pilot at the controls. Problem is, it lacks the all-aspect stealth, but that won't be a problem in a turn-and-burn WVR dogfight at the 350-600 KIAS range.

The Su-35. Basic specifications

Half the cost because it isn’t actually a stealth craft and becuse they are going to make more than 187 planes - a lot more...

It lacks stealth from any aspect with all those external weapons stores. Radar assets to the rear of the engagement (AWACS or other F-22s) would paint the SU-35s, and forward deployed F-22s would launch fire-and-forget AMRAAM missiles from somewhere over 30 miles away, without ever turning on active radar. Then they'd "bug out" using afterburners then supercruise. The SU-35 pilots might be able to see the nearest F-22s using FLIR technology, but would be unable to get any type of weapons lock due to F-22 stealth.

Soon afterwards over 90% of the SU-35s will explode. Rinse and repeat.

Your tagline is 100% correct. :-) It's truly a shame that the F-22 production lines have been shut down. I hope we vote in a sane government that restarts them before it's too late. Come on, 2010 elections!

F-22 will not be built by Obama and it will not be deployed by the clown in chief. Su-35 wins by being the only ones built and flown while ours are still in the hanger. Sad but true. When the balloon goes up—we will not have time to build the Raptor and get it to the front lines. If you think World War is no longer possible just ask the people of Georgia (the nation not the state). Like Stalin trying to deal with Hitler, the attack will come when we least expect it and I wonder if we in America will have the resolve to fight a real enemy.

“Stop drinking the kool aid.”

LOL! There’s a difference between 200 yards and 30 miles.

Rumor has it that shot was taken after the exercise...I’m sure the Navy pilots are feeling a mite bit outgunned these days.

F-22 envy - a rampant disease among fighter pilots.

“F-22 will not be built by Obama and it will not be deployed by the clown in chief.”

Congress caved to political pressure and de-funded the two to be built this year. Things may very well look different next year.

The F-22 is already operational and deployed in Alaska and the Pacific.

nice looking plane; hopefully the skill of our pilots will overcome the age of the F-15 if it ever comes to air to air combat. We are looking at a return to the inferority of US aircraft in relation to foreign aircraft that existed in 1938-40

The Su-35 looks more like an F-14 than it does an F-22.

Obama capped the fleet of F-22 fighter jets at 187.

Well it would be nice if the F-22 had some way of receiving firing information other than the AWACS operator shouting "hey dude, bandits. 12 O'clock high!" into a microphone.

It does, all without itself emitting anything. In this scenario, its radar would be detecting the pulses from other aircraft, otherwise everything would be as if it was using its own radar.
