They do this for the same reason that they long ago stopped referring to carbon dioxide, instead just shortening it to "carbon." It gives the impression of something dirty and sooty instead of what it actually is - just a harmless invisible gas that is emitted every time we exhale. This alone should cast serious doubt on the whole theory.
