The AF used to send the problem children to Greenland, or Guam.
I had a friend on a sub who wanted off the boat. His captain made sure he went to Diego Garcia in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
Reminds me of a story I heard awhile back. A large AF transport type aircraft, having delivered personnel and goods to Thule, Greenland is being serviced for the return trip stateside. The airman responsible for cleaning the head holding tank is a little late and the pilot, a major, is getting impatient. The airman finally shows up and the major reams his butt & finishes off by threatening to see the airmans next assignment really sucks. The airman responds, "With all due respect sir, it's minus thirty degrees outside, it's dark for the next two months, I'm cleaning crap out of aircraft in Thule, Greenland ... where would that be?"
