The Huskster commuted the sentences over over 1,000 convicts in 10 years - mostly because they claimed to have had a Jesus moment in prison.

That's exactly what I suspected when I first heard of this.

You just know that word swept through the prisons that all you had to do to get pardoned was to clasp your hands and tell Huck (tearfully for extra effect) you'd "found Jesus".
