In the mid-1960s President Lyndon Baines Johnson agonized throughout his White House years about the War in Vietnam. Like Mr. Obama, he was pursuing an ambitious, controversial, and expensive social agenda, which included Medicare and Medicaid, two of the three programs that currently are bankrupting the country.

Prior to the surge, I was referring to Dubya as “Lyndon Baines Bush”, not only for his no-win policy (up until then) in Iraq but for teh biggest entitlement program since LBJ. BO makes both of them look like pikers in entitlements and like brilliant sages in foreign policy.
Remember the daisy commercial with the nuclear detonation in the background?
Wasn’t it LBJ that also managed to throw away the “lockbox” for Social Security funds and allow that money to be used in the general fund?
I don’t recall who was responsible for that “unified budget”, but Alan Greenspan was still defending it a few years ago.
