A wealthy rancher was due to be declared Honduras's new president today after a tumultuous election dogged by the overthrow of his predecessor.
Preliminary results gave Porfirio Lobo 56% of votes, prompting cavalcades of cheering, honking supporters in the streets of the capital, Tegucigalpa. His nearest rival, Elvin Santos of the ruling Liberal party, conceded defeat.
Lobo, from the centre-right National party, promised to unify a country polarised by the military-led coup against Manuel Zelaya in June, a political shock which rattled Latin America and left Honduras isolated and stripped of aid and investment....
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal said 61% of registered voters cast ballots, a big jump from the barely half who voted in the 2005 election won by Zelaya. Local media, which backed the coup, hailed a "historic" turnout....
But critics said the election was neither free nor fair and had whitewashed the coup. Leftist governments including those of Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador and Venezuela said they would not recognise the vote, branding it a farce which could embolden coup-minded conservative forces across the region...

a farce which could embolden coup-minded conservative forces across the region...
One can alway hope.
Maybe it’s time for a change.
grrrr.
It was not a “coup”
Geez, was the whole Honduran thingy another example of bammy jumping to conclusions? Looks that way. Nice to see a republic protect itself from the anointed leftist dictators.
They repeat the big lie over and over. It was not a “military led coup...”
Obamao and Hillary are fit to be tied.
“A wealthy rancher...” OMG! Is that a, ya know, capitalist pig? Plutocrat? Boor joie? Exploiter? Robber baron?
The humanity!
I think “Porfirio Lobo” is a great name.
The opposition threatened people not to vote. Then they claim that a low turnout signals support for their boycott. But here’s the thing:
Take the 2005 election’s turnout. Subtract 2009’s turnout. Call the difference the boycott. (Even this would be silly, again, since Zelaya’s supporters tried to intimidate people from voting.)
Now, give every “boycott vote” to the candidate closest to Zelaya, Cesar Ham. Guess what? Ham still finishes in third place.
I hope the new president takes and learns a lesson from the way Zelaya governed by doing just the opposite. A center moderate president will be much better than the socialist communist Zelaya. I hope the new president will do things and put policies in place that will actually help the Honduran people to live in freedom and prosperity.
"dogged by the overthrow (not!) of his predecessor"
Why read further? To see how much crap they can pack in the next paragraph?
Boor joie: a person who is very happy that he is rude and uncultured.
A real live Typso, y'all!
I love it!
WTF is a “boor joie?”
Is that English?
Is that English?
bourgeois?
"A coup d'état (pronounced /ˌkuːdeɪˈtɑː/, (plural: coups d'état) or coup for short, is the sudden unconstitutional deposition of a government, usually by a small group of the existing state establishmenttypically the militaryto replace the deposed government with another, either civil or military. A coup détat succeeds when the usurpers establish their legitimacy if the attacked government fail to thwart them, by allowing their (strategic, tactical, political) consolidation and then receiving the deposed governments surrender; or the acquiescence of the populace and the non-participant military forces."
The US Mass Media CONTINUES TO LIE.
They have no counter for the following:
The Removal of Zelaya was NOT A COUP.
It was done by the Supreme Court based on Honduran Constitutional Law and supported by the National Assembly, including by those within Zelaya's OWN LIBERAL PARTY. The Honduran Military if anything kept Zelaya from being killed, and escorted him out of the country. They had two other occasions to draw blood, one on the ground at the border with Nicaragua and then again at the Bolivian Embassy in Tegucigalpa, but again, nothing but benevolence.
The US Mass Media is the biggest bunch of agenda-laden bullshitters and liars on this planet.
Voter turnout in 2009 was HIGHER than 2005. 61% versus barely 50% in 2005.
