World leaders spruik climate deal chances

Hopes for a new global climate pact have risen after rich nations at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Trinidad and Tobago offered to help poorer countries bear the costs of implementing any deal.

Commonwealth countries are home to two billion people, or a third of the planet's population - including major global players like Britain and India, and smaller island states like Nauru and the Maldives.

The United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen joined 53 Commonwealth leaders to work on the issue of climate change ahead of next month's conference in Copenhagen.

"Success in Copenhagen is in sight," UN chief Ban Ki-moon told the summit.

He and Mr Rasmussen praised a move by Britain and France to launch a multi-billion-dollar fund for developing nations.

Mr Rasmussen said it was now "realistic" to expect Copenhagen to result in the framework for a treaty to succeed the Kyoto Protocol which expires in 2012.

Much of the new momentum for a climate deal stemmed from a joint overture by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Mr Sarkozy.

It means basically nothing. It’s a symbolic gesture, which is typically used when a Commonwealth nation suffers a coup.

The idea of suspending Canada over disagreement with a particular policy is frankly absurd. Those who made the call have absolutely no standing within the Commonwealth - it was Greenpeace, the Polaris Institute, and the World Development Movement.

> Can you conjugate the verb “to spruik”?..

I’ll try. It’s most commonly used by our Aussie cousins, but it has some currency here in NZ, too — particularly in Auckland where I live.

I spruik
you spruik
he/she/it spruiks

We spruik
You spruik
They spruik
All spruik

It’s actually a beautiful word because of its onomatopea. It sounds exactly like its meaning. As does “chunder”, another Aussie classic word, which is to “spruik-with-food”...

HOT OFF THE PRESS IN AUSTRALIA:

http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,1,26424705-948,00.html

10AM UPDATE: TONY Abbott has promised a fight on climate change after rolling Malcolm Turnbull to take over the Liberal leadership.

Mr Abbott, Mr Turnbull and Joe Hockey contested a three-way spill at a special partyroom meeting in Parliament this morning. Mr Abbott won by a single vote, 42-41.

He said he was humbled but exhilarated by the win.

“We are gearing up for the fight of our lives,” he said at his first press conference as leader, adding that he was not frightened to fight an election against Kevin Rudd on climate change.

WHOOPEEE!!!

BTW, The LIBERAL PARTY in Oz are the CONSERVATIVES!

Liberals as conservative is confusing to us in the states, unless we remember Adam Smith and all...liberty.
