Maurice Clemmons, the 37-year-old Tacoma man being sought for questioning in the killing of four Lakewood police officers this morning, has a long criminal record punctuated by violence, erratic behavior and concerns about his mental health.
Nine years ago, then-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee granted clemency to Clemmons, commuting his lengthy prison sentence over the protestations of prosecutors.
"This is the day I've been dreading for a long time," Larry Jegley, prosecuting attorney for Arkansas' Pulaski County said Sunday night when informed that Clemmons was being sought in connection to the killings.
Clemmons' criminal history includes at least five felony convictions in Arkansas and at least eight felony charges in Washington. The record also stands out for the number of times he has been released from custody despite questions about the danger he posed.
Clemmons had been in jail in Pierce County for the past several months on a pending charge of second-degree rape of a child.
He was released from custody just six days ago, even though he was wanted on a fugitive warrant out of Arkansas and was staring at eight felony charges in all out of Washington state.

Religion Of Obama. He was expecting Obama to arrive and verify he was the Messiah.
"... he expected President Obama to visit to "confirm that he is Messiah in the flesh."which suggests to me that he considers himself a muslim, or at least a mulsim messiah "in the flesh."
According to another article on Yahoo News, it was because Clemmons was 17 at the time.
So my guess was wrong. But I stand by my other assessment.
Thanks! Got it!
I’m curious. Was Obama supposed to verify that Obama was the Messiah or that this creep was? Because we all know the answer to that.
He is last I heard.
We have K5 news and they are doing very good at live updates.
However I have to turn when they take a break and put on Cisco the Garden guy.
Cisco for me = sreeching cats, yapping small dogs and babies crying ALL at once in a small room. : P
What other Freepers are in your area that are posting?
How far from the scene where he fleed from are you in driving time?
Is there anything in your area like we have a Coast Range in between us and the rest of Oregon we live off the beaten path (as in miss our road if you even ended up out here) and there is only 3 enter/exits to our town all with usually a LEO sitting and watching plus I feel our community LEO are very aware of their surroundings since nothing really happens here and at night it just slows to a crawl, and as a fishing/hunting community the citizens are fully armed.
So bad guys have to be pretty out of it to venture here.
So do you have those walls between your home base and where this went down?
Hmm, doesn’t this correlate well with today’s announcement by Huckabee that he would not again run for prez.
Well, that’s an example of how two people can read the same words and get different meanings from them. (Which is, incidentally, why it’s so hard to write laws in plain English) I interpreted the statement to mean that Obama was going to arrive and confirm that Obama was the Messiah.
Thanks for the help. You might be correct.
20 minutes away to the north. Armed to the teeth and frosty as hell is SOP...
And he is a shorty. 5 7
The perp was that height or so and described as a scruffy black man.
FYI I believe the maniac has a beard.
This isn’t the first murder committed by a felon granted clemency directly by or due to Huckabee working on their behalf.

FTA: “Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas who leads the Republican field in Iowa and is rising in national polls, has his own potential Willie Horton, in the name of Wayne Dumond.
Dumond was serving a life prison term for raping a 17-year-old cheerleader in Arkansas in 1984. In 1996 his appeals for clemency attracted the attention of Huckabee, a Baptist preacher, after the inmate was said to have found religion.
Dumond gained freedom when paroled by the state’s parole board — with Huckabee’s endorsement — and moved to the Kansas City area in 1999.
Less than a year later, Carol Sue Shields died of suffocation, and Dumond was convicted in her murder. He died in prison of natural causes in 2005.”
The judge that released Clemmons only a week ago did so even though Clemmons had committed 8 felonies since coming to Washington state. There was even an outstanding fugitive warrant for Clemmons that had been issued by the State of Arkansas. At minimum, this ‘judge’ in Washington State should be dismissed for dereliction of duty.
After careful consideration, anti-liberal and I have concluded the statement can be interpreted either way. My own dealings with psychotics were about a 50-50 split.
And ROO.
How did he make Bail?
Ya would think it would have been set high enough so as not to make it possible.
He has a home and several self run businesses however know one seems to know what he does for a living.
ALso has like 27 or more cameras for security abound his house.
Cops say he is known to be a bit paranoid.
Nieghbors complained that he was a trouble maker.
Ticking criminal mental head case for sure.
Just needed to feel overwhelmed with a few issues to tip his boat.
If he was a convert to ROP (as well as ROO) I have to wonder how much inspiration Clemmons received from the Ft. Hood terrorist attack and how much of a role the ROP played in his actions, regardless of his other motivations.
Not related cherry.
Other than both very disgruntled/nuts and crimminals.
Good point. It’s sort of a mixed bag. Incidents like Fort Hood will push some number of loonies over the edge prior to their appointed date, and they also result in the media suddenly noticing the similar incidents that they usually don’t give 24-7 national coverage to. That media obsession then motivates the loonies who are seeking fame. And around we go...
I wonder.
