Four Lakewood Police Officers murdered on Sunday may have been the target of gangs on the east side of Tacoma. Previous attacks on officers have been reported.
On Sunday, Nov. 29, four Lakewood officers were gunned down in a coffee shop ambush before the start of their shift in Parkland. There are no suspects in custody.
The police have recently started a crack down on Mexican gangs in the state. In July 2009, after the gang crackdown was announced.
On July 30, 2009 a Lakewood police officer's personal car was spray painted with gang tags and set on fire, according to the News Tribune.
The car was parked at the officer's house and was painted with gang tags, then set on fire about 10:45 p.m. Gang tags were also spray painted on the officer's driveway. The officer was in his home at the time, but no injuries were reported by Lakewood Police. His police car was parked next to his personal car and suffered minor heat damage.
The officer had spray painted over gang graffiti in his neighborhood, according to Lakewood Assistant Police Chief Mike Zaro. He did not rule out that it could have been a random act of vandalism after someone spotted a police car parked in the driveway.
Mexican gangs are causing havoc in the Tacoma-Yakima area of Washington with methamphetamine being the drug of choice for the gang. They are moving into Native American territories where a police presence is scant.
I’m not sure. I think the reporter is trying to give background, but the background doesn’t fit exactly. The whole “Yakima / Mexican Gangs / Tribal lands” stuff is taking place 140 miles from Tacoma. So I’m not sure what relevance, if any, it has.
Tacoma DOES have a huge number of Blood and Crips. One a previous thread I listed information on them, there are about 50 ‘sets’ between the two gangs.
So I assume that if the police are beefing with local gangs its probably the local black ones and not the Mexican ones, which are concentrated on the other side of the state.

Since the perp is black, I wouldn’t assume this was a Mexican drug gang. There are also black drug gangs, often in competition with the Hispanics.
And nothing will happen because the Brown Brigades in DC will swing into action to defend them.

And the people coming in will now take over, because they have learned how to manipulate and change the existing system: use a combination of guilt and intimidation to force the locals into backing down. And there are more and more of them all the time, and they know it.

In case no one has figured it out, we have a low level guerilla insurgency going on in the Western states now, spreading East. The gangs number in the hundreds of thousands, and there isn't the political or legal will to take an army like that on. In the end, they win.

Residents in the Park Avenue neighborhood in Tacoma’s South End are in a battle. The enemy: gang graffiti.
Last weekend, volunteers gathered to paint over graffiti on more than 70 properties that were tagged Aug. 4, National Night Out.
“Almost all of them were covered,” said Brad Allen, coordinator of the Park Avenue Neighborhood block group.
No new taggings have been spotted since Saturday. The group’s neighborhood patrol has been looking for new graffiti, checking on old tags and noting burned-out street lights.
“We are doing our thing day and night,” Allen said.
Last week’s vandalism was the second time in recent weeks that gang members had spray-painted properties in the neighborhood, which extends from South 56th to 64th streets and from South Yakima to Pacific avenues.
“We’ve never been hit before like these past two weeks,” Allen said.
The first round of gang graffiti appeared in two waves on nearly 50 properties in a 24-hour span July 23.
Between 9 and 10 a.m., taggers hit more than 30 properties. Between 1 and 2 a.m. the next morning, a rival gang crossed out the first batch of graffiti and left its own messages on 15 properties, Allen said.
Crews had painted over most of the graffiti during an emergency cleanup when a second round hit on National Night Out, when neighbors gather to fight crime issues such as this.
The second time, Allen said, the vandals targeted any type of surface – vehicles, garages, garbage cans, sides of homes.
“Anything in their way got hit,” Allen said.
Residents launched another emergency cleanup Saturday. They got help from five other neighborhood groups in the city.
Police suspect rival gangs are battling over turf within the 35-block Park Avenue Neighborhood. Allen said a recent police crackdown on gangs on the East Side also might be pushing the activity into his neighborhood.
“They are pushing this way to see what’s going to give,” Allen said.

The Tacoma Police Department has initiated a crackdown on the East Side in response to a flurry of gang-related violence.
They've added more officers to the East Side after Sunday's homicide and a handful of driveby shootings in this week. Here's the story I've written about the crack down.
Here's the press release sent out this afternoon by the department:
Five shootings, in the span of one week, have prompted the Tacoma Police Department to initiate an aggressive gang suppression strategy. The Tacoma Police Department is sending a clear message that gang violence in our community will not be tolerated.
Tacoma Police will use a two pronged approach in an effort to stop the increase in violence. The first prong will be a short term emphasis that targets the Eastside of Tacoma, the area where the recent incidents have occurred. The second prong will focus on the long term goal on reducing gang related crime in the City of Tacoma.
The short term solution will be to effectively focus resources from the Gang Unit, Community Liaison Officers, the Traffic Section, School Resource Officers, and the Special Investigations Section to suppress and disrupt violent gang activity.
The long term solution is to use suppression, intervention, as well as prevention techniques and strategies to reduce gang violence and the increase of gang recruitment.
The Tacoma Police Department recognizes that we are not the sole solution to stopping youth violence and is relying on cooperation from the community to assist us in solving this problem. Tacoma police commanders have moved more uniformed officers into the East Side after a recent flurry of gang-related trouble and a deadly shooting.
“We are going to do it until we feel we’ve had the impact to stop or decrease this more recent activity,” Assistant Chief Bob Sheehan said.
In response to the violence, the department:
* Moved its 17 community liaison officers to the East Side to work “high profile patrol.”
* Shifted the department’s 16 motorcycle officers to the East Side to be visible and respond to suspicious activity.
* Ordered detectives and undercover officers to gather information and intelligence to share with patrol officers and commanders.
* Asked the regional gang task force made up of officers from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, Lakewood police and other local law enforcement agencies to focus on the East Side this weekend.
* Enlisted help from the South Sound Gang Task Force, which is headed by the FBI and has members from area law enforcement agencies, the state Department of Corrections and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The beefed-up patrols, which began Thursday, will work with Tacoma police officers on regular patrol and the department’s gang unit to clamp down on gang violence.
Gang-related trouble has been on the uptick in recent weeks but escalated after Sunday’s homicide and called for an immediate response, Sheehan said.
“Right now, because of the activity we are dealing with, we have to focus on suppression,” he said. “Our concern is the safety of the citizens of Tacoma and to suppress this gang activity.”
The fatal shooting happened in the 5500 block of East G Street, where Alrick Hendricks, 18, was killed during a confrontation in the street Prosecutors have charged Xavier Magana, also 18, with first-degree murder in the shooting.
The homicide had gang-related undertones, police said. The two teens had ties to East Side gangs, at least in the past, investigators said.
In the days since, police have responded to at least five gang-related drive-by shootings on the East Side and South End. No one has been injured, but property was damaged and residents saddened or frightened.
Gayle Reis, a longtime East Side resident, knew Hendricks and Magana and others who’ve been killed.
“I am just sad about our neighborhood,” she said. “We have kids dying all the time over here. How many of these do we have to go through?”
The spike gang violence came as the Police Department’s been working to revamp and bolster its strategic plan to fight the continued activity. Sheehan has been retooling the plan for the past few months and hopes to incorporate other city departments and community organizations to quell the gang activity and prevent more youths from veering toward that lifestyle.
The extra officers in the current crackdown are working their regular shifts and will respond to suspicious activity and help patrol officers. Sheehan wants them to be visible on the streets.
“People should see (the presence) out there,” he said.
The Police Department expects to soon receive federal grant money that will allow officers to work overtime on curfew enforcement missions and party patrols. Sheehan said the department also is in line for state grant money to work on gang enforcement.
“This will give us a one-two punch,” he said. “It’s going to be great to have that money.”
Sheehan is asking for the community’s help, too. He wants residents to report suspicious and criminal activity to the gang hot line at 253-594-STOP (253-594-7867).
He doesn’t want the gang outbreak to over take the East Side’s crime-prevention efforts. Earlier this year the city expanded its community-based services program in the neighborhood. The program provides services and advise to residents trying to clean up and fix issues in the neighborhood.
“We do not want them to take a step back,” Sheehan said. “We’ve got to stop (the gang violence) and make every effort to get control of it.”

Prosecutors: Teen gunned down after being challenged to fight

TACOMA, Wash. — Police here have issued an arrest warrant for an 18-year-old man accused of gunning down another teenager Sunday night.
Xavier M. Magana has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old Alrick Hendricks.
According to court documents, Hendricks was at a graduation party at a home in the 600 block of East 56th Street on Sunday when Magana walked by and challenged Hendricks to a fight.
Investigators said the two knew each other, and Hendricks had beaten up Magana in an earlier fight.
On Sunday, the two teens walked about a block away from the home to fight, and Hendricks’ step-mom showed up to plead with him to leave, the documents said.
Witnesses told police that Magana pulled out a handgun and shot Hendricks as he tried to run away.
Magana then ran up and stood over the wounded teen before firing another shot into Hendricks’ body at close range, the court documents said.
The gunman ran off and remains at large.
Police arrived about 8:20 p.m. and found Hendricks on the ground suffering from multiple gun shot wounds. He died at the scene.
According to prosecutors, Magana has been arrested previously for drug and weapons violations.
A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with a tip is asked to call Crime-Stoppers at 253-591-5959.
And it was not ruled out that Asst. Police Chief left his brain at an ungang related crime scene. s/
The car burning was definately gang related. Those officers are in some serious trouble. There will be more to come. I hope the people get some support to the law officers.
Oh, I don't know. Give it time. The line between fantasy and reality can be extremely thin....almost indiscernible at times.
Cops are a necessary evil, just as military and politicians are a necessary evil. It sucks, but if we don't have them, we become Mexico. We can only hope we have just enough of them all who have a conscience, or we're done.

Many people in this country do not understand how good we have it. I suppose that's one of the negative byproducts of our freedom and prosperity. It creates wealth and leisure time.
