LOS ANGELES -- Malcolm Smith returned one of Southern California's three interceptions 62 yards for an early touchdown, and the Trojans (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 24 AP) regained their defensive pride while maintaining their city dominance with a 28-7 victory over UCLA on Saturday night. Matt Barkley's 48-yard touchdown pass to Damian Williams with 44 seconds left led to an ebullient USC celebration that nearly set off an all-out fight between the teams in their 79th crosstown showdown.

I guess that will teach Neuheisel not to run ads or call time outs with less than a minute left on a finished game. Ahahaha! Poetic justice.

Pete Carroll: ‘UCLA Was Asking For It’
Okay, so he didn’t really say that, but that would have been pretty awesome. With under a minute to play, UCLA called a timeout after Carroll’s USC offense had taken a knee. No matter your perspective on what came next, that’s a pretty weak move on UCLA and Coach Rick Neuheisel’s part. So what came next?

USC, leading 21-7, went deep on a play action pass. And Matt Barkley connected with Damian Williams for a 50-yard touchdown. And then, a full-on riot nearly ensued between both teams, as USC taunted the disgraced Bruins team. And here I thought this stuff only happened in video games.

Afterward, Carroll mumbled something like, “we felt like we could take a shot, they were cheating up at the line, blah blah blah.” What he should have said? We were trying to kneel and end the game; UCLA clearly wanted to keep playing.

So? We kept playing. That’s what they wanted.

You don’t run an ad like that until after you win. And then, you don’t have to. Because you won. It speaks for itself.

Is my old school showing?

Sorry, but Rick Neuheisal didn’t run that ad, the UCLA athletic department did according to the announcers. My parents always taught me two wrongs don’t make a right. I’ve lived in Los Angeles all my life and generally cheer for both schools (I attended neither of them).

What I saw from USC tonight was truly pathetic, ESPECIALLY on the heels of all the complaining by Pete just two weeks ago.

USC took a huge image blow for me tonight.

Not at all, they got what they asked for.

Whatever, USC took a knee, the game was over, but Neuheisel wanted to keep playing...fine SC kept playing and stuck it to him. He got what he asked for.

Rick was not nice in high school. Had some success playing. Left Colorado (if i’m not mistaken, after publicly saying he was staying) and then left Washington with NCAA or PAC 10 infractions.

With all due respect, every coach calls timeouts in those situations. The classy thing to do is run another knee down play.

That was truly one of the worse displays of sportsmanship I have ever seen in 5 decades living in the city. Really sad. And to watch the SC sidelines doing their thing, again, very sad.

John Mckay, John Robinson, etc would not appreciate that at all.

Very disappointed in USC’s antics tonight. To say that’s what UCLA wanted or asked for, well, that’s a joke.

What was the spread on this game? Meaningful in view of what happened at the end or no?

Oh like hell they do. This is a rivalry game. UCLA had no chance of winning, there was less than a minute left on the clock, USC had taken a knee to end the game and run the clock out and Neuheisel calls a "screw you" time out. Fine, he wants to keep the game going, so USC threw a hail mary and it hit the mark. The poor sportsmanship was UCLA's ad, Neuhesiel's petty call, and then UCLA taking the field to fight after USC's sideline was justifiably happy.

Fine, but come on, UCLA was talking smack, and they got smacked...that’s what makes rivalries fun.

Neuwiesel is the most unethical coach in football. He destroyed Washington and he will destroy UCLA.

“Neuheisel calls a “screw you” time out.”

LMAO....sounds like I missed a good game. I agree with your analysis. I’ve never seen Pete intentionally run up the score, so Neuhesiel must have really pissed him off.

Something tells me that most of America will not see it your way, nor will the local papers....thought I despise the LA Times and won’t bother reading it.

If you’re happy with it, then carry on. Not something I taught my kids in terms of sportsmanship.

You are wrong. John Mckay would have gone for two points after that touchdown.

That is an interesting question. Could that effect the play calling?

I didn’t watch the game. But why would he call a timeout if USC had taken a knee already? I would think that he would want time to run off, quickly. It didn’t sound like UCLA had a chance to get the ball back. I’m just curious as to why he called a timeout?

I despise USC, but Carroll did the right thing. My brother’s favorite saying is “One good screwing deserves another”.
