Climategate: University of East Anglia U-Turn In Climate Change Row

Leading British scientists at the University of East Anglia, who were accused of manipulating climate change data - dubbed Climategate - have agreed to publish their figures in full.

By Robert Mendick 28 Nov 2009

David Holland is seeking prosecutions against some of Britain's most eminent academics for allegedly holding back information in breach of disclosure laws.

The U-turn by the university follows a week of controversy after the emergence of hundreds of leaked emails, "stolen" by hackers and published online, triggered claims that the academics had massaged statistics. In a statement welcomed by climate change sceptics, the university said it would make all the data accessible as soon as possible, once its Climatic Research Unit (CRU) had negotiated its release from a range of non-publication agreements.

Scientist at centre of leaked email row stands by his findings The publication will be carried out in collaboration with the Met Office Hadley Centre. The full data, when disclosed, is certain to be scrutinised by both sides in the fierce debate.

A grandfather with a training in electrical engineering dating back more than 40 years emerged from the leaked emails as a leading climate sceptic trying to bring down the scientific establishment on global warming.

David Holland, who describes himself as a David taking on the Goliath that is the prevailing scientific consensus, is seeking prosecutions against some of Britain's most eminent academics for allegedly holding back information in breach of disclosure laws.

Mr Holland, of Northampton, complained to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) last week after the leaked emails included several Freedom of Information requests he had submitted to the CRU, and scientists' private responses to them.

Good for Mr. Holland. He could easily end up being the “Woodward and Bernstein” of this mess.

He added: “Our global temperature series tallies with those of other, completely independent, groups of scientists working for NASA and the National Climate Data Centre in the United States, among others.

I would bet that these “other” centers are not as independent as he states. I would venture to guess that he corresponded with them on a regular basis. They also have issues with that pesky share the info law.

The center in New Zealand was on the up and up.

Also—if retired people verifying their work turns up errors something is wrong. Granted they are very intelligent, but they do this as a pass time.

I am sure these other institutes appreciate being dragged into it. Here come the excuse “ well....everybody does it...”

From what I’ve read, there is no “starting over”.

The original data UEA claims was destroyed included original (written) records from the 19th century. The only retained information is the “corrected” data...with no trace of the original recordings OR the algorithms used to adjust them.

(Funny, ALGOR-ithms...did he invent those, too?!)

I don’t believe these kinds of written records would have been thrown away.

The original written records weren’t likely in the University’s hands to begin with. They’re records from archives in communities all over the world I would assume. No community archive is going to ship off original records to whomever requested them. They’d make copies and send those instead.

Ditto.

What the center did was obtain these records or rather summary reports of them from all these countries Weather services, etc., and compile them. Thats quite a bit of work on its own, and seems to have been done a couple of decades ago, pre-global warming hysteria. Thats whats lost.

What someone trustworthy is going to have to do now it seems is to re-compile this stuff from original records. A tedious business.

Don’t know why you’re posting this ACLU thing on every thread. It’s like an ad, and ads are annoying.
