"If the word “deceleration” helps you understand the physics, by all means use it." The word must have been invented for just that reason since it's helped every layman I've explained the process to in 35 years of collision damage analysis and management. I wouldn't begin to explain it as "negative accleration" unless I wanted to make sure nobody understood it.
