Berlin.
Germany's labor minister resigned Friday after conceding that a military report on a deadly September airstrike in northern Afghanistan failed to reach him while he held the government's defense portfolio. Labor Minister Franz Josef Jung made the announcement a day after the head of Germany's armed forces, Gen. Wolfgang Schneiderhan, and deputy Defense Minister Peter Wichert also stepped down.
Jung said he was taking responsibility for the fact that the German military report on the Sept. 4 airstrike didn't reach him, despite his being defense minister at the time.
"I am taking responsibility for the Defense Ministry's internal information policy toward the minister regarding the events of Sept. 4 in Kunduz," Jung said in a brief statement.
For days after the strike Jung said there was no evidence of civilian casualties from the strike, but Bild daily reported Thursday that the military report drawn up in the days after the attack suggested civilians had died.

collateral damage?
Thanks.
The civilians must not have been Jews.
The civilians must not have been Jews.
The enemy will probably sue now. They did exactly what “commander zero” told them to do to avoid being fired upon with his new ROE in June. They surrounded themselves with civilians and they still got hit.
Oh yes, they seem to be hated in so many places. I was perusing youtube videos and enjoying watching and listening to Itzhak Perlman, particularly playing the theme to Schlindler's List and then I happened to scroll down through the comments.
There is a level of hatred that is beyond imaginable (the comments had to do with the Holocaust and Jews in general) and unreasonable (not that any hatred is "reasonable"). Nobody seems to watch their language, their mouths overun their, well, that other part... They just lash out like maniacal...maniacs.
What would Itzhak think if he happened to be reviewing those cuts? Just indescribably shameful, I don't see much redeeming value in much of our society, terrible stuff. But then again, I'm reminded of the wonderful discourse with fellow FReepers, who are Jews and those I have crossed paths with through life (some having numbers tattooed on their forearms) how they endure is amazing to me. They have taught me much and for that I'm forever grateful.
well i guess you have to differ. true the state Israel is hated in the Arab world and not liked from most of Europe.
but at least in Europe this has nothing to do with the fact that they are jews. i never talked to someone in europe who would have told me that he personaly hates jews. Of course if you will dig far enought you will find someone (but i guess this can be said for everything) who really hate jews just for beeing jews. but this is definitely not the norm in europe.
Well, I sure appreciate your experience in that and thank you, very encouraging. This is one thing in which I would relish being totally wrong about. One person at a time...
Taking responsibility and accepting genuine consequences?
Wow won’t Germany ever enter the real world?
Where does it say they were looting?
They were getting gas from the stolen tank trucks. I call that looting.
They didn’t just happen to decide to innocently spend the afternoon next to two stolen tank trucks, did they now? If they had stayed clear, they’d still be alive. Simple as that. Like those looters that get fried every now and then stealing gas from pipeline leaks in Nigeria. Boo-hoo.
(Excuse the source of that pic, it came up from a Google image search.)
I hope you get the idea now.
Ok but where does it say they were doing that? and how many of the dead civilians were looting.
It was widely reported that they were getting gas from the tank trucks. What else would they be doing there, as I’ve asked earlier?
A bunch of Taliban with a couple of stolen tank trucks - cool! let’s go hang out with them! What could possibly happen?
;-)
