Downtown Denver is a cesspool. I worked there (1600 Broadway) in the late-70’s. You didn’t want to hang around after work.
Downtown Denver is not a cesspool. Downtown is generally safe even at night. There have been a number of incidents besides these attacks, but still downtown Denver is generally safe. Downtown Denver is nothing like areas in other major cities. East and west of downtown crime is higher.
