Michelle Obama, once celebrated for her patronage of high street shops accessible to most American women, has raised the fashion stakes by ordering a pair of thigh-high leather boots from France.
The American first lady could give Carla Bruni, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and a former supermodel, a run for her money once she receives the flat black boots, which have been specially ordered from Robert Clergerie, the French designer based in Romans, in western France.
Mrs Obama has also ordered a pair of calf-length boots in beige buckskin, according to Mr Clergerie, whose boots sell for hundreds of pounds.

Robert Clergerie said the first lady's order had been sent in by a retailer in her hometown Chicago after Mrs Obama could not find the exact style she wanted. One of the pairs was modified slightly from the catalogue model at her request, he said.
With her fashion-forward move, Mrs Obama has kicked aside controversy over the $540 (£362) Lanvin trainers she wore to volunteer at a charity food bank last spring.
Critics were quick to question the appropriateness of wearing such expensive shoes to a charity event for the poor - particularly given the troubled economy.
During her husband's presidential campaign, Mrs Obama was lauded by US women's magazines for sporting affordable cardigans from J.Crew and reasonably priced dresses by Anne Klein.
Clergerie is one of the few remaining great shoemakers in Romans-sur-Isere, a small town in south-west France that has been renowned for its shoes for centuries.
He has previously made footwear for Madonna, Bianca Jagger and Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy.

I agree completely. I would steer as far as possible from making a coment about someones looks IF the media didnt try and present her as some sort of beauty....EVERY DAMN DAY.
The woman is ugly....there are some people (men) who she would appeal to. These are the same sort of men who would screw a snake if somebody held its head still....a very small % of the population.
Im sick of the media lies and this is soooooooooo preposterous I refuse to remain quiet.

Laura has inner beauty and it showed. She and President Bush never disgraced the dignity of the Presidency like the present residents of the WH have.
I recommend boots up to her nose.

In the case of Michelle O., truth is always stranger than fiction.
Condi was pretty leggy and I remember her wearing some nice boots from time to time. The thing about boots, a woman has to have the legs for them and I doubt that Michelle does.

Agree — Every single first lady since my memories of first ladies began —are of FLOTUSes who were overall appropriately dressed.
Different, of course, as all were of varying ages and sizes. But Mamie? Pleasant looking little lady; Jackie Kennedy, our Camelot princess whether we were Kennedy fans or not; Lady Bird Johnson - rather charming southerner; Pat Nixon — thin but pleasant enough; Betty Ford, pretty and well groomed; Rosalynn Carter; unremarkable but not in a bad way; Nancy Reagan — petite and always perfectly groomed; Hillary — you know, even now I think Hill dresses more appropriately than Meeshel on her ‘best’ day.
This whole Obama thing is too much — headlines screaming about how fashionable and beautiful she is. Gag me. Do they think we are BLIND? And her personality and mean looks don’t help much, either.

I was just thinking about her — she was always beautifully dressed and groomed — nice smile no matter what — imagine her as ‘first black first lady!’ Goes to show our comments are NOT racial in any way whatsoever.

This is an example of *binge buying*. Something ain’t right with M.O.s narcissism. Why is she behaving like a lottery winner? Or an inmate who has just been released into the general population?
That’s taxpayers’ loot she’s lavishing on herseff.
Where’s her sense of propriety?
There are three rules to thigh high boots #1 you must be over 5’5” to wear them or they become waders, #2 you must be thin, and #3 they will make anyone with hips look twice their size. She fails 2 of these.
Cabella’s, Dick’s, Gander Mountain, Dunham’s, etc.
Ask for “waders.”
