India doubts strength of US ties ahead of Manmohan Singh visit

Washington - Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrives at the White House Tuesday wondering if his country remains the US priority under President Obama that it became under President Bush.

The Obama administration thought it had answered that question months ago when it announced that Mr. Singh's day of meetings would constitute the first state visit of Mr. Obama's presidency – a distinction meant to convey the importance of the occasion.

But Obama's week-long trip to Asia that ended last Thursday has India questioning anew the value of a US partnership. In particular, the tenor of Obama's three days in China was heard by Indians as American acquiescence to rising Chinese power across Asia.

Now, India wants to know if the Bush administration's recognition of it as the world's largest democracy and as a like-minded partner in a region of extremist threats and authoritarian governance was a quirk, to be replaced by closer US ties to China.

India is also wary of the Obama administration's stepped-up commitments to rival Pakistan, which it believes is still supporting extremists groups as a way to keep India off balance. For its part, the administration is torn over India's growing involvement in Afghanistan in terms of civilian assistance and economic development. Although the involvement offers a valuable economic boost, it also causes misgivings among Pakistani officials and the military.

Is India a muslim country, Mr. Prime Minister?

He is right to question Obama, if we ever figure out where Obama is headed, except over a cliff, we will have to let him know.

Considering the state dinner is in a tent on a cold rainy November day, like that is surprising I would say Zero just gave India the Heisman. Zero is usign this dinner and putting it in a tent as a payoff to his Hollyweird, Chicago and Wall Street buddies.

Oh Gawd. I can only guess that our Indian friends are wondering just what sort of gaffes and humiliations PM Singh is going to be subjected to.

Obama is going to insult him three ways from Sunday and perhaps he won’t even be consciously aware of why he’s doing it.

The leftist instinct to favor evil can be downright supernatural.

Well, India is being honored with the first State Dinner apparently of the Obama Administration.

Perhaps only pomp and circumstance and may not calm unease about the way things are going in that part of the world.

Still, the Indians shoud be careful not to come off as too snitty or demanding. Even tho’ it works for the Pakistanis ;>>

Oh dear, I just remembered. The occasion is more to honor Dear Leader’s Hollywood buddies than anything else.

Look to see PM Singh brusquely shouldered aside as Obama fawns over Spielberg and Geffen.

The script writes itself.

No country can trust the US anymore.
We have screwed “allies” more than we have screwed enemies.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrives at the White House Tuesday wondering if his country remains the US priority under President Obama that it became under President Bush.

GW Bush saw India as an anchor, an ally, a 3-way counterweight, and potentially an enormous aircraft carrier and staging base to be schmoozed and won over.

O sees them as cardboard cutouts and non-voters.

The line in India was that if Bush wanted to, he could win the national election there. He’s that popular...60% or so.
