Will Texas’ State Sovereignty be a major issue in the battle for the Republican Governor’s race?

Perry has seemingly begun to build a case of grievances against the federal government. His primary points:

-Current administration is “hell-bent” on socialism Washington is now actively punishing Texas through it policies

-Health Care Bill would eat up Texas’ $9 billion rainy day fund in 1.5 years

-Cap and Trade would cap the entire southern economy Texas may have to reassert 10th amendment protections

I will not pretend to know whether Perry is sincere or if this is simply positioning himself for the upcoming primaries. But that’s not the point… certainly these statements indicate the mood of many of the people in Texas. If nothing else, Texans know that our state, among others, is under attack by the current redistribution-focused federal government. And we know that something must be done…

But are we serious?

“That treaty was submitted to the Senate on April 22, 1844, with the presidential message of the same date (Executive Journal, VI, 257-61); and it was rejected by the Senate by a vote of sixteen ayes to thirty-five noes on the following June 8 (ibid., 311-12). “

I, for one, am seriously hoping that Texas becomes the state which fires the secession shot heard round the country. Somebody has to start it.

If Texas is looking for a Secessionist then they should look to the following candidate and forget Perry and KBH. Neither one of them is going to go that route.

Larry Kilgore for Governor

The treaty gave TEXAS the RIGHT to secede

Texas could split into five states, but no document ever said Texas could secede.

Thanks........ but the Treaty was never ratified by both Texas and the US. Texas was finally admitted into the Union via a Joint Resolution signed by the president on Dec. 29, 1845.

I stand corrected. I guess there was a document, just not one that ever had any effect.

“The POINT of Sov Movement is that TEXANS are TIRED of the mindset that their lives should be determined by what some politician DOES for them. The point is we are tired of being told WHAT to do.”

I spent 7 months in Richmond, VA, which was (obviously) the heard of the Confederacy.

If the CSA had won the war, the poor southerners would’ve been subjected to the most incompetent government ever to talk the face of the earth, who was saddled with massive debts it could not hope to repay.

A couple of decades before that, Texas’ government collapsed under the weight of its own debt, which partially explained its return to the Union in 1865.

What I’m saying is that if you want to seceed from the Union, that it has been done before, and you better’d be ready for economic chaos. Oh, and whether the tyrants come from Austin or DC, there will always be people telling you that you can’t do whatever you wanna do.

And it was due to Texas being broke and unable to govern itself. Go to Austin, check out the State Historical Museum, it’s all there.

Due to the fight with Mexico Texas did incur debt.
That was the point of the payoff. Rather than REWARDING TEXAS for driving the Mexican army out of Texas. As ususal the Federal Government saw a chance to annex even more territory.

I think the fed govt would put up a fight. A big one, and there would be a lot of bloodshed.

As much as I agree with the Governor about his grievances with the fed govt, I hope to God it never comes to Texas trying to secede.

Texas isn’t going to secede. There have been secessionist in Texas since it’s formation I guess. They come and go. Search the internet and you’ll find different groups, some even claiming to be the legit gov’t of the State of Texas with their own governor, etc. A few years back the state chased a few of them up into the Davis Mountains. They were eventaully caught and the leader has since died, I believe. The money and abilities aren’t there to secede, imo.

Maybe a little historical perspective will help.

You seem to be under the illusion that TEXAS as a Country would be far worse off without the nanny state federal government.
I DISAGREE.

If Texas were to attempt secession (and I don’t think they will) they woouldn’t be the only state. OK would surely follow and then probably a couple western states.

Also, IIRC Texas supplies more soldiers than any other state in the union. The front line military is pretty much made up of rural southern white boys many of whom would refuse. It would truly be a mess.

That goes without saying. Will probably take at least 10 years to achieve.
1st step would be for Texas to sue for return of Fed confiscated land.
