John McCain may have been the Republican Party's national standard bearer last year, but now it looks like he may have a hard time just hanging on to his Senate seat.
A new Rasmussen Reports poll of likely 2010 GOP primary voters in Arizona finds the longtime incumbent in a virtual tie with potential challenger, J.D. Hayworth. McCain earns 45% of the vote, while Hayworth picks up 43%.
Another candidate, anti-illegal immigration activist Chris Simcox, is picking up 4%.
Hayworth, 51, a conservative former U.S. congressman who now is a popular radio talk show host in Phoenix, is reportedly interested in the race but has not formally declared for it.

Friday's poll found that Hayworth captures 59% of the male GOP vote in Arizona, while McCain wins 58% of female voters. Younger GOP voters tilt toward Hayworth.

You’re 73 John. Despite what you think the nation can survive without you in the congress. Retire already!
It’s time for McCain to retire his career.
Get Simcox out. If you’re not polling in the 30s in 3-way race, you’re a spoiler.
Let’s all keep our fingers crossed...
Hmmmm, no mention of the Globe’s claim of him being mortal ill.
Have to look into Hayworth. Sounds good so far.
JC Hayworth bump.
Works for me.
As I recall, there was a movement to mount a primary challenge of McCain in 2001 that got ash-canned after 9/11, because McCain was a hawk. Probably would have done better to replace him in 2002 — but it is always easy to be wise in retrospect.
Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! Hayworth! And will he be calling Sarah....just wondering.
Go to bed, old man.
I’d vote for JD just to shut up Mega(n)
McCain’s daughter has a book in the words and her teases on Twitter were indicative of her not liking Palin.. McCain could be between a rock and hard place if his daughter trashes Palin in her book.. Sarah might not have any so-called allegiance to McCain...
Oh yes!
Handwriting on the wall, John. Time for you to go.
I wonder if he’ll switch parties like his ex-RINO friend Specter?
It would be so awesome to see Captain Queeg defeated. Go spend your wife’s beer money, John. Its way past time for you to be put out to pasture.
Will it come with crayons, or will we have to purchase those separately?
Why is it that whenever McCain meets Raila Odinga's favorite cousin, McCain always allows himself to look like a scared man who is apologizing for something?
Meanwhile, the Narcissist in Chief has a smirk on his face that screams, "Haha, beat ya!"
Sheesh.
