Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) on Tuesday rejected clemency for Larry "Bill" Elliott, a former military intelligence officer who killed a Woodbridge couple in their home in 2001, paving the way for his execution at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Elliott was twice convicted of killing Robert Finch, 30, and Dana Thrall, 25, who were shot several times in their townhouse. Prosecutors argued that Elliott was obsessed with Finch's ex-girlfriend and that Elliott killed him as a way to win her over. Thrall, who was living with Finch, walked in on his slaying and was then beaten and killed.
A first jury's verdict and recommendation for a death sentence were thrown out after defense attorneys discovered juror misconduct. A second jury reached the same conclusion.
During the sentencing phase at the second trial, Elliott cried as he blamed his capital murder conviction on "lies" told in the courtroom and "Gestapo tactics" on the part of police detectives, and he criticized "holes as big as a truck" in the case. The former Army counterintelligence officer from Hanover said he felt sorrow for the families of the victims, but he denied any role in their deaths. "It is not humanly possible for me to have done the things I was accused of," Elliott, now 60, said.

Why does this guy get the chair, while the DC sniper got injected last week? Does the convict have a choice?
Texas is the only state to perform more executions then Virginia.
Virginia is taking care of business.
By the way, does anyone know when Maryland, adjacent to Virginia, executed anyone?
Just curious.
In reading articles about the DC sniper, I learned the condemned does have a choice. If he fails to make a choice, like the DC sniper did, the default mode is lethal injection. This one chose the chair.

Larry Bill Elliot
With two Democrat governors in a row, we’re lagging behind. Looks like Kaine wants to catch up before he leaves office, for some reason. Must be DNC polling for 2010 and Democrats looking weak on crime.
If he’s going to fry, I sure hope he’s guilty.
Yeah, but we swab their arms before we give them the needle.. for some reason. I had no idea Ol’ Sparky was still in commission.
The Green Way would be “Hang Em High”.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzst! NEXT!
And by all means recycle the rope.
The last execution in Maryland was on December 5, 2005, when Wesley Baker was executed There have only been 5 executions since capital punishment was reinstated in 1978
Maryland is a pretty safe state for killers especially now with the Democrat Martin O’Malley as Governor.
Not a bad state for common criminals either as it is almost imposible to get a license to carry a firearm.
Let me ask this. Does it really matter what excuse a killer uses to commit murder?
They’ve executed 5 murderers in Maryland since the restoration of the death penalty 30 years ago or so. The last was during the Ehrlich administration.
>> The Green Way would be Hang Em High.
... with a hemp rope.
Or bury ‘em alive. That would work too.
One thing you all do is have a bbq afterwards. Seriously.
WHY did he do it?
Thanks, Venturer, and to you, nd76. I was surprised that the last execution in Maryland was so recent.
This sentence from Venturer, “Not a bad state for common criminals either as it is almost imposible to get a license to carry a firearm” reminded me of an inquiry I made at a gun store in Maryland some years ago. I was then (and now) a Virginia resident and unaware of the newly-created concealed carry laws, I asked the clerk if Maryland offered its citizens permits to carry concealed.
After a short outburst of laughter, he said, “Yes, but just try to get one!”
unaware = aware
