SAVANNAH, Ga. – An Army cook and single mom may face criminal charges after she skipped her deployment flight to Afghanistan because, she said, no one was available to care for her infant son while she was overseas.

Spc. Alexis Hutchinson, 21, claims she had no choice but to refuse deployment orders because the only family she had to care for her 10-month-old son — her mother — was overwhelmed by the task, already caring for three other relatives with health problems.

I'm sorry, but I have little sympathy for someone who can't keep her legs closed while being on active duty, if she doesn't have a man there ready to take care of her and her child. To me, it sounds like there's a little cowardice, ie, someone who wanted all the goodies the Army had to offer (free child care, free health care, decent pay, etc.) but didn't want do what was asked of her once things got tough. Wouldn't surprise me if she let herself get impregnated so she wouldn't have to deploy.

When I was in the Army, not having a family care plan was the quickest route to a general discharge.

The G**D**N Army did NOT issue you a family!

Anecdotally, I've heard a lot of this type thing happening.

It's a brave new military, though, and not politically correct to notice such things.

AMEN!!

at least not in combat areas, unless in hospital settings. Otherwise the Armed Forces must hire OBGYN and pediatrician doctors for combat duty.

i call it as i see it....why here in florida are 99% of the daily shootings etc committed by certin ethnic groups....there are certin groups that choose to live differently than the rest of us and think the laws do not equate to them until they are caught....and if you want to speak of race...well i believe if you look closely enough it is them that will not let the race card die...so if they want to play it...so will i...

Thanks for reminding me of one of the "benefits" of being in a combat unit: no women to put up with. Even 30 years ago, family care plans were a big hassle for support units to deal with.

GEN Casey's looking for him as we speak. The daddy of the baby is screwing with Casey's "diversity".

Just give her a general discharge and be done with it. It isn’t as if her MOS was critical.

Nope, they don’t want to say anything about a father. Why, there was no father-—this was a virgin birth, you know, and this woman is as sainted as Mary in the eyes of liberals.

I’m sick and tired of this mess! I agree with the posts that state give her a general discharge and let her go on her own. Then she’d find a way to care for the child, oh, oh, no .... probably be supported by our tax dollars anyway.

I know that women in the military is no new thing, but I am not for it anyway.

I especially don’t think women should be anywhere near battle zones or potential battle zones. It does not speak well for any nation to send its women into these areas.

I especially don’t believe any woman with children should be placed in harms way or anywhere near it. If they serve in the military, they should be in support positions at a distance from potential battle great enough to ensure that their safety is in no greater danger than that of a civilian in a civilian work place.

Women should not be on naval surface ships or submarines. They should not be in combat aircraft.
