Do we want the government running healthcare when they can’t even run the post office?

“Postmaster General John Potter is seeking permission from Congress to reduce mail delivery from six days a week to five, a move that could save the agency $3.5 billion annually.”

M-W-F would be ok with me.

The Post Office is a legitimate expense of the Fed Gov. It is specifically mentioned in the Constitution. Tell me again how the Post Office can “lose” money? It’s an accounting thing. If the Post Office showed a profit, would we ever hear about it? Or would that money end up in the general fund?

Think about it. We don’t need the Post Office to cut back. We are being led around by the nose thinking it’s losing money. That is the same thing as saying the Military “lost” billions of dollars.

When they started pushing “first class forever” stamps, the writing was on the wall that they were raising cash for promises of service further into the future (knowing that additional rate increases would push even more people into online bill payments, competing delivery services for packages, etc.).

I kinda feel bad for the Post Office. It is still the best in the world.

Total mail volume was 177.1 billion pieces, compared to 202.7 billion pieces in 2008, a decline of almost 13 percen

The number of junk mail pieces is more than half of that 177 billion.

When advertisers realize that they are not getting value for sending out the junk mail, the postal service will be in even bigger trouble.

Hey, John, why not save $71 billion by shutting down altogether? I’m pretty sure FedEx and UPS would have no problem handling what you can’t.

They shouldn’t order their red ink to be delivered by UPS, then...

Announce a 7 year plan to close the postal service.

Start closing and combining branches. You can begin in downtown Oceanside. Within 7 blocks from my house there are two post offices.

Stop Saturday delivery of mail and stop replacing employees who retire or leave.

Remove any restricton on private mail and delivery services.

Cancel the union contract and pay raises and benefit increases starting July 1, 2010.

Raise the cost of a stamp. $.43 to $.60 isn’t going to kill anyone.

Here's an example of the brilliant management at the USPS.

My local Post Office here in San Antonio is a larger facility that covers about 6-8 ZIP codes. Very busy place.

Last week I noticed that the parking was completely full - I had to park at a shopping center across the street. I went in expecting to find people lined up at the counter. There were only about 8 people in line.

I asked why the parking lot was full and the lady behind the counter said the employee parking lot in back was being torn up and re-paved and all the employees were parking in the front.

I asked "So, at the busiest season of the year, all of the employees at this facility are taking up all of the customer parking spaces? Why don't you all park across the street at the shopping center?"

"Those parking spaces are not just for customers", she snapped.

They recently lost an important piece of mail I sent; so I finally came into the 21st century and started paying bills online

When the government is running healthcare, we are going to call the Post Office an unqualified success.
