n.Korea Ends Experiment with TV Commercials

North Korea stopped TV commercials in late August, less than two months after they started to be shown in July. A Unification Ministry official on Sunday said occasional advertising of goods on [North] Korean Central TV started July 2 with a commercial for Taedonggang Beer but stopped on Aug. 29.

Quoting a North Korea source, the Yonhap news agency reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il fired Cha Sung-su, chairman of the Central Broadcasting Commission in charge of all TV programs. Kim was said to have been "enraged" because he regards commercials as the thin end of the wedge of Chinese-style market reforms. The ministry said the firing has not been confirmed.

Another source said only a small group of North Koreans, mostly in Pyongyang, can enjoy the beer or Koryo ginseng advertised on TV, and the North apparently stopped the commercials to avoid stoking envy and unrest amid the current food shortage.

Is it not true that North Korean society--at least as viewed from the perspective of the Korean Workers Party--iss segmented into about two or three classifications. At the top, a very small percent, are *trusted comrades*, and in the middle, another small percent, are *regular cadres*, and then at the bottom, probably 80%, or "untrustworthy traitors"?

If so, that is a pretty small market to appeal to, just the small elite of the country, I don't know why they would have to put it on TV for the masses to see.

What do they do during the breaks on Sunday Night Football? Don’t tell me that they have to listen to Chris Collinsworth patter on. Those poor people.

Guess the eating dirt commercials haven’t led to increased sales of dirt.

Commercial-free. Do they have pledge breaks?
Can I receive that instead of Public Broadcasting-TV.

Well, there is a catch, though. Non-stop Kim Jong-il hagiography.

I guess the commercial for the new “tree debarker” “Lunch in under 30 seconds” didn’t go over very well.

“the Yonhap news agency reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il fired Cha Sung-su, chairman of the Central Broadcasting Commission...”

I guess it is a safe to assumption that when they say “fired” he was basically dragged outside and a bullet was put into his brain.

Small beer ping. With a name like "Taedonggang", it better be good!

A Unification Ministry official

It's like they read 1984 and built a country around it.

Unification Ministry

For several years until 2007, many weren't sure which side they were on. It sort of functioned as a laundering conduit. Launder money and information on behalf of NK regime. Label nice-sounding name for SK government money and give it away to big wigs in NK to use it as they see fit. Buy Champagne or weapons. No questions asked. Or give favorable spin on every negative news from NK. Sometimes suppressed it.

Now it appears to be back on working for SK interest.

Under prior left-wing regime, the name "Unification Ministry" did carry some(sinister) connotation which betrays its official mission.

Close. The three parts of a fascist state can be classified as Inner Party (the top), Outer Party (the middle), and proles (the slaves).

Remember, modern statists don’t take Orwell’s 1984 as a cautionary tale. They take it as a how-to manual.
