Is there a revolution inside of the California Republican Party?

For a third time inside of the current election cycle a statewide Republican candidate has emerged with an embarrassing voting record.

The GOP’s 2010 roster of statewide elephants now feature three voting violators: former HP CEO Carly Fiorina for US Senate, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman for Governor and newcomer Damon Dunn for Secretary of State.

Each of these GOP candidates are holding serve inside of their respective campaigns, yet they display a great weakness with one of the most vital qualifications for voters to determine where they stand on previous issues, agendas and candidates – their voting records.

I live in California and I've voted in every election, including primaries since I turned 18, 11 years ago. I know some people who don't vote out of principle in protest of the political system, and I respect that.

But, in most cases, if someone doesn't vote, I think it indicates a lack of engagement on the critical issues, and a lack of principle.

I know Meg Whitman is considered to be a RINO. But I do listen to conservative talk radio and she has been running a lot of radio commercials hammering away at the state’s irresponsible spending. I do think she is beginning to connect. Nothing in politics is perfect and we have to work with what we have.

There is a STRONG conservative, Chuck DeVore who is running for the US Senate. You can vote for him if you think Carly Fiorina is too liberal.

If I do find myself in CA come next year, I will consider
the candidate with the best RKBA record. Ms Whitman is not
it, and neither, I suspect, is Ms Fiorina.

What is RKBA? Anyone the Republicans nominate will have my vote over Boxer or Jerry Brown.

I've learned to be very skeptical of Republicans candidates who promise to "cut spending" but refuse to provide specifics. In Whitman's case, I can tell it is a blatant attempt to appeal to the right to win the nomination, without saying anything specific enough that she might actually have to live up to. If she gets elected she might cut some token program by a small amount while increasing spending in other areas 10x as much.

Call me naive if you like. But Whitman is prepared to spend a substantial amount of her fortune to have one of the most thankless jobs in the country. I have to believe she wants a major change in the status quo. Why else commit such a huge sum of her own money?

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t Campbell advocating huge tax increases?

Absolutely not. He was one of the worst pro-abortion, pro-"tolerance" RINO's in congress.

We can find negatives with ALL candidates. Poizner contributed to John Kerry’s presidential campaign. Campbell is the most liberal Republican in all of California and supports tax increases. There is nothing life in life that is perfect and as Ronald Reagan once said politics is the world’s second oldest profession. While I have decided to vote for Chuck DeVore for US Senate in the primary, I am still open in the governor’s race but leaning towards Whitman. There are NO major movement conservatives running for governor best that I can tell right now.

Whitman is trying out the "Reagan" tactic of focusing on a few issues, relating everything to those issues and then hammering non-stop on those issues.

Those issues are fixing the Education system, reducing Gov. Spending, reducing Taxes/regluation. Golly, who could be against those things?
The problem is Whitman will have to face down SEIU, ACORN, NEA, CTA, and every other state and nationwide union. If her response to the "non-voting" issue raised earlier this year is indicative of her political will, then expect capitulation and compromise on every campaign promise.

Absolutely not. He's not as aggressive as Steve Poizner but he wants to freeze spending and make CA tax on businesses more competitive with neighboring states.

He wants to increase education spending though and he's bought in to the smaller classrooms arguement.

The same reason other leftist billionaires like Bloomberg or Corzine spend their own money to get elected. Just because someone spends their own money doesn't mean they plan to reduce government.

Look, I don't disagree with you.

There are no other viable candidates. Whitman, Poizner and Campbell are all we have. All of them are basically (to varying degrees) fiscally conservative Democrats that happened to be registered as Republicans.

This is as good as it's going to get this time around in California. So, it comes down to abandoning any hope of getting a conservative and deciding who has the best chance of beating the real Democrat.

Other than getting a Binding None Of The Above choice on statewide elections...hold your nose and vote.

So she will spend a vast fortune to change nothing? Sounds like a big waste of time and money. Corzine was what he was. A big time liberal Democrat. He never disguised that. Bloomberg always was a Democrat but only became a Republican to run for mayor. Then he left the Party anyways.
