Even Timmy Geithner once had trouble pronouncing Barry’s last name. Soetoro, Sukarno, Sudaharjo? Peter Geithner evidently told his wife that ‘everything was set’ a long time ago before Timmy and his sister traveled to Illinois for several weeks by the lake at a relatives’ home. Even Tim and his sister found their father’s phraseology and his stern warning to his wife that a vacation to the U.S. could invite complications of some unforetold consequence quite puzzling and a bit extreme. Whatever that meant, we will never know, right? One thing we do know is that Ann Dunham Soetoro worked for Peter Geithner in Indonesia and that Barry returned to Hawaii to attend school as Timmy said was planned.
