AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) -- Area school officials worry federal stimulus money slated for education could soon run out and cost them teachers.
A new report compiled by Carl Bethune, the superintendent of Jefferson County schools, looked at 11 counties in the Augusta area. It predicted that 701 teacher jobs could vanish when stimulus money is no longer available for fiscal year 2012.
Richmond County officials were approved for nearly $32 million in federal stimulus funds that helped save more than 400 school jobs for the next two years.
Once stimulus money runs out, school officials say they would have to find another way to pay for certain positions. If the economy doesn't pick up and state budget cuts continue, Richmond County schools spokesman says other funding sources could prove difficult to come by.

All government money does is put a temporary extension on some projects (and employees) that are connected to government funding already. Business, which depends on long-term stability, sees the short-term nature of government funding and does not invest in expansion. They’re waiting for the other shoe to drop.

This reminds me of Clinton's 5000 new police officers. The feds paid for the first few years then it was up to the various cities and most were laid off. Another sound good program setting up cities and states for failure.
What I can't believe is how so many public entities keep buying this stuff.

You all know the demographic in every locale for this issue: Republican and Democrat women and their [Meow! Crack!] husbands in business.
So it’s time that we all learn some lessons. To my younger friends learning skills in productive trades, be nonpolitical and develop more plans to become more self-sufficient every month. Drive on, low-techs, and may the big default come soon.

"This reminds me of Clinton's 5000 new police officers."
Federally, Bill Clinton said he would put "100,000" "on the streets." And yes, that money was also desired by bipartisan voters in most locales (where the troubles start).

Stimulus money to hold teaches jobs, wow, now thats job creation! Union payback for the votes. We were sold the Brooklyn bridge in January and we knew it! We better get our voting finger exercised and vote in mass #. SEIU and ACORN will be out thier comitting voter fraud to continue our tax dollar handouts. Lets show them who's boss.

The stimulus money was supposed to be a temporary bridge for 1-2 years to help bear through bad times.
Instead places like NY INCREASED spending with the money for a big hurt 2 yrs from now...

Stimulus money was to stimulate the economy and create jobs, instead it props up shaky sectors until the money runs out and they collapse, costing still more jobs. Oh what folly you libs have wrought! A lib solution on the horizon: another stimulus!

The political pressure to spend more taxpayer money on government jobs will be enormous.
