Now that Lou Dobbs has hung up his microphone on CNN, the populist New Jersey resident could be a viable candidate for the Garden State's US Senate race in 2012, political experts said yesterday.
The veteran anchor -- whose strong views on illegal immigration, health care and job creation propelled him to the top of the ratings at the cable network -- said yesterday he had been approached about getting into politics, but insisted he was still weighing his options.
Should he choose to jump into the famously ferocious world of New Jersey politics, Dobbs -- who surprised his fans on Wednesday with an on-air resignation -- could be a force to be reckoned with, said experts.
For years, Dobbs has dogged rumors that he was eyeing a political career. But with the conservative Gov.-elect Chris Christie poised to take control in Trenton, many Jersey political watchers feel the timing could be right for Dobbs, a self-described "Rockefeller Republican."
"This is something that has been talked about, particularly for 2012 against Senator [Robert] Menendez," said Brigid Harrison, a political science professor with Montclair State in New Jersey.

Ping.
Run, Lou, Run!
Works for me.
Good...that would really make for some lively debates. I like his attitude....TOUGH-MINDED.
How is he a “Rockefeller Republican” if he opposes illegal immigration and opposes free trade? I guess he’s pro-abortion? Not that I don’t like him, but I question the use of this term for him.
Isn't the current term for that a RINO?
He is to populist for me..
Lautenberg... Menendez... Dobbs.
Wow.
Tough choice.

Wish he was running in my state, NY! Lou was pegged as a racist, anti-Latino when he was anti ILLEGAL immigration which ties in with border security, which in light of the terrorist cells in this country and our pullback from the war on terror, will make border security an even greater issue. Heck, I’ll go over the GW and campaign for him in Latino communities!
I think we can win with many middle class Latinos and blacks. They are hard-working, church-going, family-oriented people. We need to alert them that we will all soon be working for big government, big labor, big corporations and the welfare class and we better stop it before it’s too late. We just need to get stats together and show them that every city and state where Democrats enjoyed overwhelming majorities for decades, everything has gone to hell, broken down and unemployment is higher than the national average. I’m sure that will get their attention. These folks WORK and scrimp—just like us.
Stats to get: % Unemployment, % on welfare, % of businesses closed, % of new business, % of empty buildings & lots, % foreclosures, # of years Democrats held majorities, % incarcerations, % high school graduates & % high school drop outs. Then we should tie this information to the candidates these districts keep re-electing to the house and senate and to their local state and house seats. Oh, one last thing—who is getting the money in these districts back home? Community organizers and Labor?
I think we need to change course just a bit—it’s all well and good to try and stop health care and Cap & Trade, but what we really have to do is bring it home to people that they are not being represented by their so-called representatives, but other interests are.
No, now is the time for someone with FIRE in the belly, IMHO.
He could just take his money and retire, but if he wants the hassles he would be great.
Populism is not conservatism....
Well if the immigrants you are talking about are legal and can vote they are more apt to vote for Dobbs because they probably went through the process and are Mad at those who break the law and get all the Benefits for Nothing
Anyone who could work in this country’s liberal moonbat media for as many years as Dobbs hasn’t got anything America needs.
He might have a sliver of a clue on occasion, but in the end he just an that old fart that should just go away. The rest of us have got our hands full pushing back on him and and his “esteemed” bigoted colleagues who have forced the mess were are living with now. 30 years of their putrid indoctrinating narrative has resulted in (a once great) country populated with utter fools.
Sincerely, find a rock, Dobbs, and take a few of your fellow snakes with you.
I am speaking as someone with experience — 25-30 years in media myself. I know these people.
The legal immigrants in NJ are probably among those most hurt by the illegal situation; still, there is a lot of herd mentality here.
Why do they say he “surprised” people when he resigned? Most expected him to be fired for speaking the truth; he probably was.
Well, we better start trying to break some off the herd, and I really think we can.
Neither is Marxism, I will take my chances that this movement will start out populist and quickly turn Conservative. In a large part most of this depends on what Governor Palin decides to do.
Lou needs to move to Connecticut. It would be a thrill to see Lou run against the lying, cheating Chris Dodd.
I find that Populist are worse than socialist..
