Ford says the new car will be more fuel efficient and offer lower ownership costs to municipalities than the existing Crown Victoria law enforcement vehicles. Though the Crown Victoria is popular among police departments, the large sedan is relatively inefficient, getting an EPA-estimated average of 19 mpg. Ford says it will unveil the details of the new car in the first quarter next year. Ford says it sells about 45,000 police vehicles a year, about 75 percent of all police vehicles sold in the U.S.

Those days are over. All law enforcement agencies will be required to buy police cars from goobermint motors or the feds will withhold funds. Hide and watch - its coming.....red

Hopefully the new one is more resistant to exploding on impact than the Crown Vic.

Driving a Crown Vic is like taking a trip back in time (in a good way). Not many sedans left that are a big and roomy (to the point of being cavernous) highway cruiser with plenty of horses up front to drive the wheels in the back. My first car was a Crown Vic, and I still the miss it some days (1985 model year, dark blue with whitewall tires, btw.).

Well, if you have a million dollars, and want to quintuple it x10 in a few years, buy up a bunch of stripped down Crown Vics, and a heck of a lot of spare parts, and warehouse them.
Then, in a few years, you can have an auction, with about 200 police chiefs in cutthroat bidding to get their hands on “real” cars, not those [multitude of expletives deleted] “green” cars Ford is now making.
Of course, the top bucks will go for the “built like a tank” classic models, that are like battleship plate compared to the tin cans on the road today.

Why don’t they just re-badge a Lincoln as the Police Crown Victoria?

I love the Crown Vic. I find it odd that so many complain about its size, “poor” gas mileage, and acceleration/speed. I think it stems from the terrible products that American car manufacturers provided in the late 70s/early 80s.
The Crown Vic is a comfort ride. When I have relatives in from Europe they always remark about how roomy, smooth, and quiet the car is. It is also extremely safe and has 8 cylinders that really move the car whenever you really need it. The idea that every car needs to be a small, zippy, gas efficient, “coffin-on-wheels” is ludicrous. I’ll pay a couple of extra bucks for gas in order to get where I want in comfort and style.

As a cop I have driven Impalas and Crown Vics. Given the choice give me a Vic anyday and twice on Sunday. One thing these companies don’t realize is that cops don’t care about gas mileage. Departments do. Cops don’t pay for gas.

Yeah, buddy. Got a Crown Vic story from last weekend. Big, monster highway cruiser, painted with black and white stripes, "Police" in block letters all over it, old-school blue-and-reds, not the new stealth lights. The thing screamed "COP!!" I pull into a gas station with one following me (I'm in a black WRX, it happens) - we gas up and she pulls back onto the highway behind me. Only two of us on a pitch-dark Idaho road, I'm doing exactly the limit, just a little mini-convoy. Come to a passing lane and I'm over into the right and she slides in behind me.
And then this knucklehead blasts by us both at about 90, engine roaring. Past me he sees her and the idiot slams on the brakes. Three-two-one, and on come the lights and she's got her bust. I was cheering as I passed them. She waved.

Hell. The Sheriff’s department in my town doesn’t use Crown Vics - they use Dodge Chargers!
