Killeen residents drown out protesters from fringe church

KILLEEN — About 30 Killeen residents quickly gathered Tuesday afternoon to drown out four members of a fringe Kansas church who arrived at Fort Hood to protest the soldiers killed in Thursday’s shootings.

The members were from an organization known for picketing at public events and funerals, often those related or peripherally related to gay people or soldiers in the military. On Tuesday, the members stood just outside Fort Hood carrying signs that said things such as “Thank God for dead soldiers” and “God sent the shooter.”

Heather Baker, a Killeen resident whose husband is deployed to Iraq, was eating at a nearby Denny’s with a friend when she saw the protests.

“We saw these protesters out here, and we said ‘We can’t stand for that,’ ” Baker said. “So we went to Wal-Mart and got signs, and we’ve been here ever since.”

The residents were carrying American flags and carrying make-shift signs that said “We support our troops.”

They drew constant honking from passing cars, and numerous soldiers came by to give hugs and thanks to the residents.

“It means a lot because sometimes as soldiers we forget how much people love and support us,” said Sgt. First Class Christie Garcia. “After something as horrific as this, this re-inspires and re-engerizes us to do what we do.”

After about an hour and a half, the four protesters left with heavy police protection as they walked to their car past several angry soldiers.

I’ve heard they’re all lawyers.

I am thrilled they didn’t name them. Those bastards are neither Baptists or a Church, or even Christians. When you must refer to them, please refer to them as the Phelps family.

May they rot in hell.

You do have a point. I’m a Baptist and it irritates me no end that they call themselves that. I usually just use initials.

I wasn’t there. I looked for the article after my DIL told me about this. She is ever so grateful that the protest didn’t go well for the bad guys. She said the families never saw them.

I'm kinda surprised today wasn't the day. I always thought Fred Phelps looked like that demonic preacher in Poltergeist 2.

I think it's good that they didn't name them. They're Attention Whore level RED:

My husband, born and raised in E. Texas said when I told him about these lowlifes that he was “surprised nobody killed them”.

Sorry to hear this happened.

Westboro Baptist Church isn't a church, it's a bunch of incestuous lawyers who inflame the public during private memorial services and pray for some infringement of their rights......to litigate.

Avoid them.

I read an expose of their family years back, seems Phelps would get off beating his wife and forcing sex with his daughters.

At least he’s been disbarred, though Phelps has his children (who are scared to death of him from all reports) to do his dirty work.

That's pretty much what I'd heard as well.

They make money off small towns and counties by suing over infringement of their rights and (suspect) cases of vandalism to their property. They win enough to move on to their next target.

The strain the military is required to endure is unimaginable.

It’s so true. When my husband was at DLI in Monterey, CA, there were several incidents of soldiers have slushies or hot coffee thrown on them while in town in uniform. They actually had to have briefings making sure the soldiers knew they could NOT do anything to these people in response unless they were “attacked,” i.e. punched or something like it.

I saw with my own eyes a very pleasant man at the booth for the Democrats (before the 2004 election) screaming and yelling at two young GIs in civilian clothes who had stopped at the Republican table. He was calling them baby killers, etc. They stood there, a calm and polite as could be.

You can only hope the love and support so many Americans have for the troops is not overshadowed by the thoughtless rancor.

What’s happening today with respect to the Hasan assassinations is reprehensible. Many are standing up on behalf of the troops and calling out the miscreants, regardless of rank.
