Seems a bit light, no? It does say at the end of the article that Shipman and Oefelein are living together in Alaska. Maybe they thought that would be far enough away to feel safe.

FYI, anyone living in the Cape Area back in the glory days of Projects Mercury, Gemini and Apollo knew FAR MORE than they wanted to know about the Astronaut Corps!

The difference back then was, law enforcement and the media helped cover up the "dirty linen"!

Yeah but back then the crews were almost exclusively male and military which means they probably worked out their differences the old fashioned way:

Alcohol fueled beatings, after which they would go into space.

Yes, there were women in the Mercury training program but most were probably like this woman:

and they couldn't find a helmet to contain her noggin.

I seem to recall a soap opera about the Cape and the escapades, back in the fifties...never watched it as I hate those things, but I do believe it was on for awhile.

I was listening to streaming audio stations the other night, and some old time radio programs were on. It was some kind of game show from quite a while ago, and one of the contestents was from Washington state. The host asked him what his job was, and they did allow he worked as some kind of security guard at Hanford, but the guy just said “I can’t tell you.” It just struck me as how far we’ve gone astray as a country, for whatever reason.
