Americans feel increasingly disheartened, and our leaders don't even notice.___ The new economic statistics put growth at a healthy 3.5% for the third quarter. We should be dancing in the streets. No one is, because no one has any faith in these numbers. Waves of money are sloshing through the system, creating a false rising tide that lifts all boats for the moment. The tide will recede. The boats aren't rising, they're bobbing, and will settle. No one believes the bad time is over. No one thinks we're entering a new age of abundance. No one thinks it will ever be the same as before 2008. Economists, statisticians, forecasters and market specialists will argue about what the new numbers mean, but no one believes them, either. Among the things swept away in 2008 was public confidence in the experts. The experts missed the crash. They'll miss the meaning of this moment, too.
The biggest threat to America right now is not government spending, huge deficits, foreign ownership of our debt, world terrorism, two wars, potential epidemics or nuts with nukes. The biggest long-term threat is that people are becoming and have become disheartened, that this condition is reaching critical mass, and that it afflicts most broadly and deeply those members of the American leadership class who are not in Washington, most especially those in business.

We’re governed by cynical, unscrupulous socialists.
I guess the kool-aid buzz has finally worn off of Peggy.
The real problem is there is an increasing effort to remove any semblance of Christianity from society.
We are lectured by jaded old harlots who called every shot wrong and are now trying to backpedal.
Just take the pain medicine Peggy, and die.
“Callus Children” is far, far too nice a term.
“We’re Governed by Callous Children”
And we’re “informed” by brainless twits.
Agreed.
Some of us recognized them as callous children BEFORE last November’s election. Peggy.
Gratitude and Humility
Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues,
but the parent of all others.
- Cicero
I thought Peggy and her twin Kathleen what’s-her-face were Obama Brown-Nosers? Did they run out of blow? That’s ok. I’m sure it’s covered under our new Democrat Communist Health Care.
And who did her best to see that they were elected, Peggy? America isn’t “disheartened,” not my part of it, anyway. It’s angry.
Noonan, like many other commentators, are missing the point. The self-inflicted destruction wrought on our nation is not being done by incompetence or ignorance. It is deliberate. These people are communists. They’ve filled the social science chairs at our universities for two generations, and now their brain-numbed “useful idiots” bave reached a critical number where their policies no longer are effectively challenged.
The deliberate goal is the destruction of the independent, wealthy American middle class. This is the first thing EVERY single communist regime does when it takes power. They HATE the Kulaks and the Kulaks are us. Our leftists lost power in Congress in 1994. It only made them more stridently communist, and now having re-taken power, they are going to make damned sure they never lose it again.
That’s what’s happening and putting this in any other terms misses the whole point.
Thanks, Peggy....glad you FINALLY caught on....little slow on the uptake.....sheesh!
Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance.
- St. Augustine
If Biden has a lost little sister he never met, it’s Peggy.
Peggy: Shut up and retire. You forfeited all credibility when you spent six months ignoring the most salient fact about Soetoro—that he is a baby-murderer—and wrote column after column extolling his many virtues.
No baby-killer should be in any public office.
If voters refused to put any baby-killer in any office, the Constitution would not be moribund, the budget would be under control, and the government would not be fascist.
“I guess the kool-aid buzz has finally worn off of Peggy.”
I agree; I’ve avoided Peggy for a year but I read this editorial - it’s a winner and spot on!
Shut up, Peggy Noonan, you have nothing to say that I want to read or hear. You wrote a beautiful bio of JPII. You knew him, you were in the same room with a saint. And you supported BO for Pres, the most vicious abortion supporter and advocate alive.
You are dead to me.
